Oshawa's Rogers Cable 10 station will tape a three hour package to bc shown on Monday evenings. Whitby Hospital says YES Whitby General Hospital has embraced the- proposai that Whitby become a rehabilitation centre for the region. The Board of directors of Whitby however issue a condition that Oshawa and Ajax/Pickering could take care of emergency and in-patient acute care load that has been handled by Whitby hospital. Gift CLOCA 23 hectare site A residential developer of lands in the area of Goodyear Rubber, Bowmanvile, is granting, to the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority 23 hectares of valleyland. Area citizens have been objecting to the proposed residential developmnent stating it would destroy the natural environment through which the flood plain is involved. City supports Oshawa hospital Oshawa (ieneral Hospital is getting $3.5 million from die City of Oshawa to assist with their $106 million hospital expansion plan. The Oshawa grant is being paid at an amount of $350,000 annually over a ten year period. Cuts made to community centre Oshawa has trimmed in some 41 areas on the long awaited proposed southend Community Centre which could bring the price down to $4.2 million still, however, $300,000 over the budgeted amount for the centre of $3.9 million. Housing sales take a dip The resale of houses in Oshawa dropped to 345 in June down by 22.3 percent from the samne period in 1993. Although there was a drop in June sales the sales for the first six months came in at 2730 comparing with 2352 sold in the saine period in 1993. Welfare figures drop again The local job picture continued to brighten in Clarington, Oshawa, Whitby, Scugog during June. The local unemployment rate dipped to 10.4 percent in June down from 11.2 in May and from 12.6 in June of 1993. There was also a 2.3 percent drop in welfare figures from that of May and down 3.2 percent from a year ago. Cernent deal with Japanese firm AAB Building Systein, Cobourg, cementeda 20 year export contract with Japanese- based SG Kai Trading Group for the supply of an innovative wall- building system. The deal could be worth $100 million and lead to the employment of,40 in Cobourg and 100 more across Canada. Corn roast for the heart Paul Wasson, C.T.P. recording artist's annual corn rmast has gone bigger and better this year; more recording artists and local musicians, more businesses asing to donate. The event takes place Saturday, August l3th 7 p.m. ti11 1 a.m. at the home of Paul and Charleen Wasson in memory of Larry Dec, a fellow- musician who prematurely lost his life to heart disease. The successful debut in 1993 has promoted the Durham Central Pair Directors to give the thumbs- up to 'Battle of the Bands" for a second year. This event will be staged Saturday evening September 10 from 8:30-1:00 a.m. in front of the grandstand at the Orono Fairgrounds. To date three bands have applied to take part in the competition. "Soundstream" a band from the Newcastle area with members from Clarke High Sehool will compete for the first time. "Grindstone,' a band led by Ryan Cureatz from Newcastle will be competing for the second year. Justin Flints band "Nepicunian" from Bowmanville will also compete for the second year. The organizing, committee feels that there is roomfor more bands to compete, and are taking applications until August 8, 1994. They expect to offer over $600. in prize money and gift certificates to the top bands. Judgîng will be done by a panel of diverse mem bers from the music industry. Judging criteria will be available by the end of July. The popular, local band "Morning Breath" will not be competing but will close off the evening with a set. Morning Breath band leader, Derek Rogers will act as Master of Ceremonies for the contest. The list of rules for competing bands include, only amateur bands, majority of members to be full time students, each band must supply a demo tape, no heavy metal allowed, one piece of original music required. This show is free with a $3.0 flat rate admission to the fair after 8:30 p.m. on September 10 or a regular admission before 8:30. Parking charges will be discontinued after 8:30 as well.
