fi Oro~o W.ekly Times, Wednesday, Pebruary 9, 1994 ) Local group seeks funding, for Orono Drop-in Centre A Support Group in Orono for the Orono Drop-In Centre met last Thursday afternoon with a Mr. Gary Adams of the Ontario Ministry ýof Culture, Tourism, and Recreation. The meeting had been arranged by Councillor Ann Dreslinski. Rev. Mervyn Russell chaired the meeting. Others present were: Mrs. Carol Yeo, Mr. John Thomson, Mrs. Kathy Coatham, Mr. Roy Forrester and Counilor Ann Dreslinski. The purpose of the meeting was te explore possible provincial funding te assist the operation of a Drop-In Centre in Orono. The Drop-In Centre opened te the youth of the cemmunity as of the first of January and is held in a 600 square foot space in the Old Mil on Main Street just north of the intersection with Mil Street. It is reported that ten volunteers do assist with the Centre which is open Tuesday and Thursday eve-nings. At the present volunteers and youth are devising a progrars for Aikenhead set to build The way bas been cleared for Aikenhead warehouse te start their building in the Town of Whitby on a 22 acre site on Victoria -Street just east of Thickson Road east. The firm expects te hired 200 full time and part time employees. He said it was important te have a streng organizatien supporting the program and that the program, itself muet the neetis of the youth. He said he was aware that net ail youth want te play organized sports and that in many cases these youth are being left eut of local recreational epportunities. With the information obtained from Mr. Adams the local Support Group are te meet on February l2th te further correlate information for an application of funding. Mr. Adams did state that if funding was approved for rentai of space it would only be for a short period of time. Kinsmen purchase police cruiser The Kinsmen Club of Oshawa bas purchased and equipped a 1994 Lumina APV van for the Regional Police departinent. The fuily equipped cruiser cost a total of $27,000. It wiil be mainly used for cemmunity work in south Oshawa. Peterborough/TO air flights Passenger air service between Peterborough and Toronto is expectedt t start next menth. The coats were valued at $3,300. Police stopped a van in which the men were travelling and reclaimed the coats and laid charges on ail four men. Region rejects Pickering request The Regioln of Durham bas rejected a request from the Town of Pickering that a search begin for a "wiling host" te accept the regions garbage when existing dumps are full. Pickering was of the opinion that the Interim Waste Authority would net be able te have new dumps operating by the time they are needed. The resolution was defeated 21 to 4. Regional chairman Gary Herremna stated that the region bas ne legai right te look for its own dump. The authority is presently held by the province. Shopping mal for Aax Work wiil start this spring on a 60 acre new shopping centre in Ajax featuring large major stores including Costco Warehouse Club. Alex Shepherd has been appointed te the federal gevernment's finance cemmittee. Close out Art festival After four years the cemmittee in charge of the Ganaraska Arts Festival have decided te set aside the Art Festival this year. Limited cash, the ongeing recessien and the lack of cemmunity support have been given as reasons te take a breather this year and te sit back and consider the future of the event.
