Orono fmised the first period ahead 4-0 with a goal at 1:02 by #16 Jef Mercier, assisted by #14 Jordan Beacock. The downtown store bas operated witb -a staff of fifteen. No ambulance service cuts The Port Hope-Cobourg ambulance service has survived this year's social-contract cuts. The Port Hope/Cobourg operation is to continue as in the past with 18 fuil-time and eight part time worker operating two 24- hour ambulances and one day ambulance out of the two towns. Port Hope Mayor not sure Mayor Betty Collins is going somewbat against the trend when she questions the need for beavier fire power for police. She bas said she is not sure whether a btter weapon may bave helped to ward off the killing of a Sudbury police officer recently. Mr. Grose added a new twist in the campaign following the election wben he left bis big signs up a littie longer witb a "Thank- You" message attached& Systemic racism tapie at local forums The provincial commission looking into systemnic racismn in Ontario's crimTinal justice systemi wiil hold two public forums in the City of Oshawa. The first forum was held on November 4tb witb the second forum being held November l6th at the Simcoe Hall Settiement Honse on Simfcoe Street South. Bail packaging with further concerns The Ontario NDP govermoent may impose a deposit on ail pop cans and bottles to encourage people to -buy soft-drinks in refillable containers. New Brunswick operates such a programn charging, 10 cents on ail beverage containers. The 10 cents is refunded at a recydling centre. Bail packaging in Wbitby is ready to fight against such a move as it did when a deposit was levied on aluminium cans. Royal Commission visits Oshawa The Royal Commission on Learning will be holding public bearings in Oshawa on November 9th and lOtb at Eastdale Collegiate. The commissioners will hear submissions from groups and indivîduals includ ing youtbs in and out of school, parents, directors of education, teachers and teachers' associations and community groups. Submissions wil be heard from 10:30 a.m. tili 12:30 a.m., 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.. Those wishing to make a presentation are asked to contact the commission at 1-800-565- 0861. GM's 1.5 millionth truck in Oshawa Joe Byme of Oshawa, will bc the owner of the 1.5 millionth C/K truck assembled in Oshawa since 1986. The truck will be the eighth GM truck that Bymne has owned. It bas been stated that 5 million trucks have been assembled in Oshawa since 1919. A total of 675 trucks were built in Oshawa in 1919 compared to a total of 238,200 so far this year. Hunt on for new station The Ministry of Transportation is looking for a site to locate a new truck inspection station along 401 between Highway 115/35 and the City of Oshawa. The existing inspection station located on 401 just west of Bennett Road intersection is considered to be obsolete and should be expanded or replaced. The ministry is currently seeking a suitable site as to the environmient. The project wasa proposai by Courtice Auto Wrecker whicb wouid have beon iocated in part lots 31 and 32, concession 10 in Darlington Township. A delegation from Blackstock opposed the proposed plan pointing to the fact tbe location was in the Oak Ridges Moraine and witb concerns of leachate frorn the proposed plan. A quarterly report by the Clarington Fire Department iead te some discussion at tie general purpese committee meeting on Monday. The report showed an increase in deparirnent responses in the third quarter tbis year, 302 as compared to 230 in the same period in 1992. The year to date number of responfses in 1993 total 757 comparing with 709 for the same period last year. As bas happened in the past Medical Assist catis were a subject of discussion. The report listed 49 cails for the third quarter in 1993 wbich compares with 22 in the same quarter in 1992. However for the full three quarters the 1993 total reached 86 while in 1 992 for the same period the total reached a few less at 80. Counc. Hannah suggested it was a matter of downloading onto the fire department to which Counc. Hooper said he agreed. Fire Chief Michael Creighton said the situation is being monitored at the Regional level and said he has been assured there is no downloading. He said there was a problemn in Clarington and Whitby where the ambulance service is contractual and is not mun by the province. 1He said it often happons in both centres that a second ambulance is not always available as in Oshawa and some of the other centres in Durham. C ounc. Hooper also said that ail calls do not corne through 911. The fire chief pointed out that both the permanent and volunteer fire fighters with Clarington have taken First Aid witb St John Ambulance and do have some qualifications to assist in emergencies. Counc. OToole questioned if it might be possible for the municipality to take over the ambulance service in the municipality.
