Gorfs View On£tari o Scholars The government created'somne ripples of resentment a few weeks back when it was announced that it would discontinue the $100 monetary part of the Ontario Scitolarship Program award. As the M.P.P. for this riding, I also took considerable flack from somne of my constituents over the dropping of mhe s100. The Ontario Scholarship Program was introduced in 1959 to recognizetme high standard of academic work in Ontario secondary schools and to provide an incentive to our young people to proceed to some form of post secondary education. I 1959, mhe s100 went a long way, it doesn't go far today. The Ministry of Education is now revising the programn in order to recognize the outstanding academnic achievemnent of alh students. This includes mhose who are continuîng their educition in university, college, or an apprenticeship programn, and those who are entering the workforce. In 1989-90, there were more mhan 18,600 Ontario Scholars, and at least mhat number are expected to qualify tbis year. Inaa time of economic restraints I believe that mhe government bas a responsibility to encourage achievement among ahl our students. To do titis, I believe titat we' must put as much money as possible into education programrs and services. I arn very proud of our Ontario Scitolars. These students will continue to receive an Ontario Scitolar certificate and a congratulatory letter signed by mie Minister, the Honorable Marion Boyd. to personally mark their achievemnent. To al mose who wrote to me or took mhe trouble to telephone me, I appreciated your views. I also hope that you can agree, that we owe al of our students the best education we can provide mhem with, in order mhat mhey are better able to compete in the workplace of the '90s - the way I see it.
