28, 1991 Kendal Mites Conclude Successful Summer Season Landfii Site Forum The Interim Waste Authority is holding a number of public forums across the Region of Durham seeking input as to a landfill site to be chosen in and for Durham Region. One of the forum is being held at the Bowmanvile Recreation Centre on Septem ber l2th from the hour of 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Following the final game of the season played in Kendal Wednesday, August l4th, the, Kendal Mites celebrated their successful summer at Coach Gary Thertell's homne with a corn roast and victory party. Organized by Coach Therteli and bis wife, Dianne, the victors chomped on fresh cobs of corn, barbequed hot dogs and refreshm-ents while tbey viewed a video-taping of a previous game - cheering themselves on as any spectator would. Playing twelve gamnes this, season, these young athletes tied one, lost one, and were the victors in the -remaining ten. Aged 5 and 6 years, the girls and boys of the Kendal/Newtonville area were led by Gary Therteil and assisted by Carl Lowery, two very dedicated coaches who brought enthusiasm and lots of fun to each game. The Kendal Mites played in Garden Hill, Welcome and Port Hope and had strong support from parents and grandparents alike, as well as local spectators at home gaines. The team enjoyed use of the new ball diamond at the north-east end of the (closed) Kendal Public School yard. The 1991 season was the second season for the Kendai Mites, and the, team drew a whopping membership of 17 to the combination T-Ball/3-Pitch league. The Kendal Mites are one of ten teams playing under the sponsorship of the Kendal Recreation Association. Brian Foster, Association President, said that along with the young Mites, children to age 16 play hall in Kendal, as well as the long-time senior mens teami. 1Kendal bas a long tradition of basebaîl, and according to Coach Gary Thertell, ". .. it is important to provide local kids with summer recreation, and that' their interest in baît continue as they grow up in the cornmunity." Brian Foster added that not only do the parents and other community supporters cheer on their teamis at games, but they- are having t he chance to play without the burden of high registration fees. As Mr. Foster stated, "If's worth some extra work to see the enjoyment of the kids. . . the smiles on their faces. Hopefully, theylIl be on the field, instead of on the street." Coach Gary Thertell expressed bis sincerest appreciation to the parents of the team members for their assistance at games and practices. The teamn is scheduled to play in the seasons closing Girls' PeeWee teams takefirst and second in tournament tournament bo be held in Port Hope on Saturday, September 7th. Coach Thertell added that he "... hoped that the kids have a good tirne, and wish themn good luck in the tournament, and that all the kids corne back next year." Parents wishing to register their young Mîtes for the 1992 season may contact Brian Foster, President of Kendal Recreation Association, in the late spring at 983-9141. On Saturday, Auguist 17/th the Girls' PeeWee Softball League held its annual tournamenit in Solina. There were eight teams representing the communities of Solina, Tyrone, Hampton, 2 teams from Courtice and 3 teamsfrom Orono. Event though for some it was a long day, it turned out to be a very productive day for Orono with two of their 3 teamns placing lst and 2nd at days ýend. Orono C team coacbed by John Hayward finished tbe day taking fïrst. place. Orono B team coached by Bob and Chris Faulkner earned the 2nd place standing.
