.~-------'--~-.--.--- ~ - -- OmoweklyTnsWdesaAugust14,11 7 Newtonville Al*ve by Peggy Mullanj "Decoration Day" As the gorgeons summer sunshine brightened,,everyones spirits. on. the weekend, Newtonville's Lakeview Cemetery received a steady, stream of visito>rs throughout the day, Sunday.. 1This dear-to-the heart, special day is put aside once a year in memory of loved ones. Flowers of all sorts are placed on the grounds in memoriami. "Swept Under the Peggy Mullan Saving up for that very special gift - new carpeting - is somnething many of us have done. Even if it is just one certain room, perhaps one with a fireplace or large picture window, where we cas lounge a littie on a cold winter's night; a cozy carpet can be our own littie treat or reward. Rewards such as carpeting corne with aàligh price tag. Unfortunately, a full set of instructions on caring for your carpet does not accompany the high prîce tag. Ever notice that? Doesnt seem right. It isnt until the superb - quality, everlasting carpet we thouglit we purchased starts to buckle and mat, and we have to caîl in a repair exper t. Low and behold we discover we have been hurting this broadloom aif along. To add insult to injury the warranty from major manufacturers usually runs out Carp et"i after 12 short montlis. Naturally, nothing goes wrong until after about the lStli month. Here are some priceless facts in preventive medicine. First of ail, a quality underpad is of the utmost importance. It cas add years to the life of the carpet. Secondly, the very moment <buckling or bumps occur, get help. If the warranty still stands, cal. If not, get a professiona in to stretch the carpet right away. Carpets should be vacuumed daly. Build up of dirt acts like sandpaper against the backing, gradually wearing down the <carpet. Avoid socks and bare feet. Perhaps a little surprising but oils and residue fromt walking in sock feet or barefeet takes its ton. No shoes of course. Slippers are the answer. Front time to time, move fumniture, even if just a little. This prevents severe, and constant pressure on one spot. Avoid laying area rugs on carpets. Keep carpets as dlean as possible, that is' dont wait until they are "obviously dirty" before deciding to get tliem cleaned. Taking precious tîme to maintain your carpet will positîvely make the world of difference ini more ways then one. kNewtonville is proud to have such truly lovely cemetery grounds. The community is grateful to the committee for the perpetual fine Little Scoops ... - Totally legitimate complamnts have been heard in and about Newtonville regarding free running dogs. Some dog owners have somechow seen it fit and fine to allow tlieir pets to go loose wthout a second glance. This is in several cases, flot just unkind and irresponsible to the animal,'but a definite danger to other people, including small chiîdren. Here in town, 1 have liad to contend with a close-to-raging pit bull that lunged after us as my daugliter and 1 walked our own dog. Lucky for us that time, the animal's owner was right behind. There is no excuse for allowing any dog to roain loose, let alone a breed that is known to be attack oriented. 1 dont care what kind of understanding the master maintains lielias with the animal. 1 join quite a number of others i asking dog owners to ensure their pet is properly restricted. - Th ank you - - Happy Anniversary August 19 to Bill and Mary Skelding. 'Decoration Day' in small communities. . . a special and important tradition. Friday evening, August 23. Pleasures. One of the most wonderful ones I love to indulge ini throughout the surner months is early morning coffee, outside. The sounds of the morning in the country are purely poetic. That, combined with the plush greens, colour bursts of flowers, under lieavenly blue skies gives a "natural higli" not to be equalled. Hope'youlIl keep in touch ... - Enjoy- GM car sales increase for July Car sales in July increased by 12.9 percent over tliat of July of 1990 while combined sales of cars and trucks increased by 9.8 percent for the samne month last year.
