8-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 5, 1991 Band members honour teacher .Members of the Clarke High School Bands along with members of the Band Parents' association took part in a Band Banquet held last week at Clarke High School when tribute was paid to Mr. Nicholas who for the past six years lias directed the bands at the school. The band leader leaves his position at Clarke to take a position at one of the Cobourg Secondary schools. In speaking to those present Nicholas thanked everyone for their support and stated lie feit tliat the Clarke Band was second to G ord's Ve i The Hidden Costs Last week in the Legislature I was selected by the govermment to reply through debate, to a miemrber of the Conservative Party, who had spoken against the Wage Protection bill. The member, Bob Runicimian, spoke at length of the "alleged" trek to the United States by companies and directors wlio would not be held at ransom by legislation designed to make themn responisible when workers are left high and dry by them. I suppose we should look at Ontario or for that matter Canada as an avant-garde in social justice programs. But, is thîs sometliing really wrong? I am glad to stand behind legislation designed to protect people from b'eing used and then discarded. 1 am also quick to recognize the very hard, raw reality of countervailing corporate power and vested interests. It seems to me that at the moment we have a classic example of a popularly none. He spoke of the silver medal won by the Clarke Band in New Orleans last year and said it was the only band in the Boards jurisdiction to win sucli a medal. Nicholas spoke of teamn work as the key to success. Following short addresses by Debbie Nowlan, trustee; Mr. Hubbs, principal, Mr. Pelesliok, President of the Band Parents; Jill Brown, president of the Band and Mr. Nicliolas.tliose in attendance were favoured by a number of musical selections by the senior band and by the Jazz choir, the 11V a a elected government, colliding against the economic govermment, run by the traditional corporate structure. Big Business in the United States stands upon, greed, cheap goods and low taxes. Ronald Reagan, and now George Bush love it that way. In the United States one out of every three Americans lias no healih insurance. Yet in the United States 12.2 per cent of, their GNP is spent on health compared to our 9 per cent. Have you received the signal? Health care makes lots of money in the United States, hence no health insurance plan. In Ontario, our govemment is trying to create a decent society. A place where the weak, the ili and the elderly and tlie poor, are maore than statistics placed in tlie profit or loss columns of big business. Everything we try to do lias a price. Isnt it ail worth while in order to have a feeling of public wel-being! 1 think it is - the way 1 see it.
