~l~AU ~ 4,rIUI~s4.. k Caring Seldom have we been moved to the point of such high spirits as last week following the attendance at the annual Appreciation Night held by the Town of Newcastle Community Care organization. It just wasn't a passing fancy for it remained ail the while we drove home and in fact it was an unhelievable feeling. We have thought about this on a number of occasions since trying to figure out just why the event had such an impact to create such high spirits. Certainly it was a, différence to that which we read in the daily news, different to what we view on television where the world is ail in a turmoil. There was no flowering words at the Community Care event but the care with which the organization operates in the interest of others was so evident. Firstly some 303 residents of the area volunteer there time and talents for others. Many give most generously while other do what they can. And there are some active spark plugs heading up the organization and this ail melds to a great program of assistance with time, effort and solely the reward of helping others. But it appears to be much more than that for the group- in attendance at the event were themselves enjoying the outing, it showed in their conversations, the expressions on their faces and just a plain goodness tbroughout from everyone. 1 was not part of it but 'm glad to have been present and glad that there is a feeling of high spirits and plain goodness in this world. It was apparent and it moved me. Over Kil In a recent conversation with one of the area real estate agents we were told that on two occasions of recent weeks possible clients for property declined any thought of moving to Orono. The cause was a deplorable sewage condition in the Village. In fact the news had reached one client in Scarborough. It's a fact that bad news travels fast. There has been some overkill, to our thinking, as to the problem of private sewage disposai in the Village and the word had spread far afield. Ini speaking to a rep of the Durham Health Unit it appears that the Orono Creek'is flot an open sewer and that in fact it is tested periodicaily by the Ministry of the Environment and the tests are, we understand, within desirable limits. We have yet to see sewage running down the street, and further we can sit out in the back yard without the offensive smell of sewage with the exception of the few pump outs. And if it is as back as some of the stories where has the Health Department been. They do investigate registered complaints and if corrections are needed they are made. No doubt there are specific problems but it is within the realm of individuals to be able to correct these problems, even though it may be somewhat costly at the time. We are flot opposed to municipal services for sewage disposai but lets not over kill a situation, that for the majority, is livable and whose systems do operate properly . The overkill is affecting the value of property in the Village. Sunday was -ý beautiful day, a litie breezy but êomfortab1e. After Church it was ên ideal day for sitting out in the §un or going for a quiet country dri-e, flot particularly busy early on i.i the day on the highways, but traific was steady al evening. This was peptacost Sunday. Rev. Ransom ga~ve the Cali to Worship following the singing of "Rejoice, the Lôrd is King". The choir sang the antlbem "Great Is Thy Faithfullness". 1Chad Switzer introduced Arlene and Ron Phillips to the congregation aÎid Rev. Ransom received theif transfer of membership to tie Kendal United Church. We are verypleased to have them join us in worship. The childrens hymn was "Love Devine". Bryan told them Pena means 50. The people used to corne from ail over 50 days after the planting of the crOPs to give thanks to their Gods for a bountiful harvest. Jesus' disciples happened to gather on this day after Christ was crucified, in the same place and Jesus Spirit came down and spoke to them and although the people there spoke ail different languages and understood no other than their own, each understood what was said. When they rettimred to their own lands they told of their experiences tha day and that is how Christianity was spread around the world. Pentacost Sunday is the sharing of the good news of God, love and forgiveness. The Psalm reading was from Comment.. ike it or not, Cana dian truckers have I.a point. No matter which way the government tries to sugar - coat it, competing with the U.S. market is tough to the point of being impossible. That affects business and our economy. Virtually everyone was worked up about, or caught Up in the, spectacular traffic jams caused by over two hundred stay-put tractor- trailers i and around Toronto, as, far out as Bowmanville. If you look beyond the surface - the inconvenience, lost work hours, headaches and exploding tempers, you will see a strange and weirdly wonderful hint of farniliarity of awhile back. Oka. It struck me the other day. Here is a distinct case of yet another group of frustrated Canadians standing up against the governmnt. And their voices were heard. Remember that old Carpenter's song, "We've only just begun., " Weil fellow Canadians, the time is coming to shake off some of those complacent cobwebs, buy a Canadian flag - hang it , wave it and get ready for Canada Day, 1991! Indeed, we have only just begun. Peggy Mullan 104: 24-30. Rev. Ransom read from Ezeckial 37; 1-4, Act 2; 1- 12. Following the singing of I1 feel the winds of God today", Rev. Ransom gave his sermon on "The Wonder, of God'. This was very short and very plain to understand. He told of a well known atheist in Michigan who invited all to corne and hear him and lie would prove that God did not exist. Miter ranting on for quiet a while, he asked if there was anyone who wanted to corne forward and provec that God did exist. No one came forth so he ranted on. Near the end of his speaking an elderly gentleman stood up and walked to the front. At last thouglit the atheist, here was someone who was going tô argue with hlm. But the old man didn't speak lie just took an orange from lhis pocket and preceeded to peel it slowly. He then slowly sectioned it and ate the orange. When he was finished lie said,"Wasn't that a grand orange?' The atheist said howwould lie know he had flot tasted the orange and he asked how this proved that there was a God. The old man replied, "you neyer know until you taste. Communion was served after the singing of Spir it of Gentleness". The service ended with the hymn "Thline Is The Glory.
