Meaglian Parker and Natasha Hills (left) of the Kirby Public School show interest ini a display on the uses of electricity as created by Open Houl On Thursday evening, Kirby Public held its Open House and Science Fair. Many'parents and grandparents, family and friends came to see the students work displayed in the hall and classrooms and the many science projects displayed in the gymnasium. Science Fair Co-Ordinator, Terry Hutchinson (grade 4/5 teacher), said this year there were 51 entries. This year the Science Fair was non competitive, and each student who participated happily received a ribbon - the ribbons were special - black with gold printing. Mr. Hutchinson said that the fair was a learning experience not a competition. ,"Participating, learning and developing problem solving skills are what is- important," he added. 'Each participant had an evaluation interview where we asked them questions about their project and gave them suggestions' Ahnost every entry was different and they were ail very well done. After the fair, we heard a recorder recital by Mrs. Petersons grade 3 class. She really lias to be commended for what to me seems a near impossible task - to teachi twenty-three, eight and nine year olds the recorder and have them perform so well. They played four songs beautifully and some students performned solos. We then went to die gym to hear the primary and junior choirs led by Mrs. Peterson and piano accompanixuent by the talented Mrs. Bolton. The primary choir sang an entertaining medley of Four Songs About Cats and the junior choir sang a rhythmic version of "Under the Sea" from the Little Mermaid movie. It was a very successful and enjoyable evening at Kirby. On Friday afternoon Mrs. Gîmblett and lier grade 1 class hosted a Mothers Day Tea. When we entered the classroom, the children seated us and each child served tea, snacks and cake to their mothers, grandmothers or friends. There were cupcakes for the children. Then Mrs. Gimblett had the chidren get into a group to perform Mothers Day songs that Brandon Hilîs. Brandon had also during an open house at the Kirby developed an interesting challenge school last Thursday evening when for those with a steady hand. a good attendance of parents and The display was in the gym, students were presenit. se and Science Fair they had written.
