Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Mny î9, - k ebekah Lodges met TaownW ig owmanavlle *B.IAe On Tuesday Aâpril1 9tli, about 30 Sisters from Maybelle Lodge Port Perry and Sunlshine Lodge, Oshiawa and Heather Lodge Orono, met for a delicious supper to entertain our Assembly Warden sister Viola Hi ggs, and our District Deputy Sister Beryl Pearce. Lodge opened accordmng to the Ritual witli Maybelle Lodge opening Lodge. The following dignitaries were introduced and welcomed. Sister Viola Higgs Assembly Warden and Sister Beryl Pearce D. D. P. of District Number 8 Oshawa East. Sister Marg Barber D. D. P. of Oshawa district number 7 west, Sister Orace Love Past Asseinbly President, Brother John Wannamaker P. G. M. , Brother Earl Gear D. D. L., Brother John Pearce D. D. G. W., also alI visiting Lodges. Roll calI showed three officers absent. The minutes of the last meeting were rend and approved by Heather Lodge and Maybelle Lodges. Sister Ruth Andrews gave lier report and she sent out one get well card, 2 Symnpathy Cards and 2 thinking of you cards. Sister Bertha reported on district Meeting held at Maybelle Lodge Port Perry, Sister Marjorie Palmer from Beehive Lodge. Bowmanville as our new incomning District Deputy President for 1991-92. An invitation to Oshiawa number 3 and Sunshine'Lodges Birthday Party was accepted and a carload to attend. birthday greetings were extended to Sister Alice and Rutli. Sister Viola Higgs Assembly Warden gave us a very interesting talk and left us with a little wooden liouse in which she liopes we will donate to tl\ 'heo Roe Clubs to which she is an advisor. The other Dignitaries also spoke a few words. Tnen seven Sisters from Oshawa number 3 did a very impressîve Tablo on Friendship, Trutli and Love. Gifts were then presented to sister Carole Boyd by sister Olive MilIson as a token for 40 years service as a Rebekali, t Sister Jean Butler for 30 years service in our Lodge by Sister Violet Dunlop and Sister Gloria Todd for 25 years service by Sister Betty Major. A gift was also presented to Sister Viola our Assembly Warden from Maybelle Oshawa number 3 and Heather Lodges. Oshawa number 3 Closed Lodge with Heather Lodge doing the business Part. A very delicious lunch was served by ail girls along with a lovely birtliday cake to celebrate our 44tli Birtliday! April 23 1Lodge opened according to the Ritual with sister Darlene Hardy N. G. presiding assisted by sister Ruth Andrews V. S. Sister Beryl Pearce our D. D. P. was introduced by sister Bertha and Brother John Pearce D. D. G. H. by Brother Dan Hall and welcomed by otr N. G. sister Darlene. Roll cal slih-"ed one officer absent. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. Sister Ruth reported she sent out six get well cards, one Anniversary card and one Baby Congratulation. Sister Violet had reported lunch had been served afi 1 he funeral of Mr. Lloyd Wannon and thanked al] wlio lielped. Sister Joyce thanked ail girls wlio hleped w itli the Lilîson Wedding Reception. A donation was made to the Camp Trillium to help chldren with cancer to have a Holiday for a few weeks in sunimer. 'Me Rebekali Degree was very nicely confirmed on our candidates Sister Julie Piper, Sister Pat Mercer, Sister Marilyn Hancock, Sister Sharon Butler and Sister Barbara Kennedy of Bowmanville Lodge. Sister Violet wanted to know if the girls going to assembly wished the banquet tickets ordered, also how many trees would be planted by Rebekali or family for the Living Legacy Prograrn. Sister Bertha remîinded the Lodge of the Friendship night at Columbus on May lOtli. Orono Lodge is to look after the Youtli and Recreation Program, a donation to Local Cancer society was to be given, Birtliday greetings were extended to sister Joan Martin, Sister Beryl congratulated the Lodge on the-beautiful degree and' welcomed ail of the new memrbers iclose off Temperance St. for events with Ass;embfly Warden After Monday nigts council meeting the Bowmraniville Downtown Business Association 10W lias a , clearance to Temperance Street fromn King to Church streets for five events spanning over a seven day period for 1991. giving themn words of encouragement. She also invited our Lodge on May 7th to hear the guest speaker on Kidney Foundation to their Lodge. She closed with a poemn she wrote on an Ode to Rebekali Lodges. Brother John Pearce also spoke a few words and congratulated our Lodge on the beautiful degree and welcomed ail new Candidates to the Lodge. Sister Hattie Wilson was then escorted to the centre of the floor and presented with flowers as a token from the Lodge as tliree generations are members now. Lodge closed according to Ritual and a social hour was had by ail. On Wednesday evening a car Ioad of sisters attended the Birthday Party of Oshawa number Three. It was their 110 Birthday. Council at a meeting in late January had denied 'the request made by the DBIA but tumed the decision around Monday evening with Counc. Hopper being the only objector. George Webster, cliairman of the DBIA addressed council asking for approval of their request . He outlined the activities of the association since its inception in 1977 and that of the support they had received from the Town of Newcastle over that period. .He said without the use of Temperance Street the full programn of events planned for 1991 would be destroyed. After considerable debate i which problems of the past were aired by council members and the Mayor, tlie issue was reopened by a better than two-third vote majority leaving the avenue open to give approval. Webster did say that they would like to close off King Street but it would cause at least one business to close during the promotions. He said Temperance Street was ideal and that there was a need for promotions to bring THiE 19 MUNICIPAL ENUMERATION IT'S EASY!- It's easy to complete the -municipal enumeration form which was mailed people downtown to enjoy the events. Counc. Hamre agreed that the town square location made sense as a centre for downtown activîties. Sher Leetooze, chairman of the Heritage Week celebration came out in support of the use of Temperance Street for local events and said it would help their annual event to have activities in the town square. Cobourg first to have user-pay garbage Cobourg residents'are a step closer to becoming the first in Canada to pay by the bag for the privilege of liaving their garbage hauled away. The town will be able to conduct the countrys first demonstration project in user-pay garbage collection as die resuît of the reent confmation, of provincial funding, to cover 75 per cent of the cost. The purpose of the system is to force households to cut back on their garbage. By charging people directly the town liopes to reduce the amount of garbage they produce.
