Oreno Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 1, 1991-15 Provided by the University of Guelph's Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) Dr, Rob McLaughlin, dean New %mpregnancy tests at zoos Zoos provide some of the last breeding grounds for the ini- creasing number of animal species facing extinction. Re- searchers arc helping make sure zoo animais can reproduce in this environment as successfully as possible. It's difficuit monitoring preg- nancy in somne of these animais - especially those whose tempera- ment makes them unapproachable. But a fecal test that determines pregnancy is being adapted by re- searchers at the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo and the University of Guelph and is catch'ing on at zoos across North America. The Metropolitan Toronto Zoo is tihe first in Canada to use the Austrian-deveioped test and bas adapted àt for determining pregnan- cy in several species, says Dr. Karen Goodrowe, head of the zoo' s reproductive physiology research team and associate graduate faculty member wîth the University of Guelph. The fecal content of pregnant animais is unique - estrogen, a hormone associated with pregnan- cy, is expressed in extremecly high quantities in pregnant animais' feces. "A Iaboratory examination can determine thse presence of tis hor- *- mone," says Goodrowe. "It's easy and safe .... You just can't go up to some of these animais and Pat tbem on thse beliy to try to feel for a pregnancy, give them an uitrasound or take a chance on anaesthetizing inem. i ou have to think of alternatives." The Austrian-deveioped test was originaily created for use witla horses, pigs and cattie. But Goodrowe and Prof. Gord King, an endocrinoflogist in the department of animal and poultry science, have successfuily identifiedA pregniancy- related estrogen levels in the fecai contenit of white ihinoceroses, gorillas and Grevey's zebras - A endangeýred species -- as we-Il as sable antelope and giraffes. DeLcrinîng pregnancy, in zoo animais is important for severai reasons. Some of thse animais at amnong the last of their species, so ensuring a methodfic and trouble- free pregnancy to tise best degree possible is vital for their propaga- ion. Pregnant animais have speciai needs, inciuding enriched diets and - i some cases - isolation, most- iy from aggressive maies. With genteel, smaii or easily handled species, pregnancy deter- mination is usualy without event. But others are more difficuit for a variety of reasons. Pistol, one of Metro Toronto Zoo's white riinos, went through hier entire 18-month gestation without zoo officiais even reaiizing she was pregnant with Atu, wbo is now deveioping into a fine maie rhino. "With an animai with as much buik as a white rhino, it's amost impossible to visually determine pregnancy," says Goodrowe. By TerryvO'Shaughnessy Three months into thse first year of the Goods and Ser-vices 'Ihx, a national poli is showing that almost haif of Canadian households have cut back their consumner spending. According ta the results of this poiî, large numbers of Canadians are apparentiy finding thse prospect of paying the GSI sa repellent (flot ta mention expensive) they have simply decided ta do without. The poli, conducted in mnid-March by the Angus Reid Group on behaîf of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, asked 2,003 Canadians, "hiow h las your household reacted ta the new 7 per cent GiST? Have you cuit back purchases, in- creased purchases, or has there been no change in your purchases as a resLaIt of the GSI?"- In addition ta t he 1 per- cent whio are buying more, the poil found that 45 per cent of respandents have eut back their spending while 54 per cent reported that they have made no change in their spending habits. A reionalý break-do\wnýi of the resuits. showý that: 1 per cent of respondentLs in Atlantic Canada have increased pur- chases compared ta 41 per, cent who have decreased; i per cent and 45 per cent respectiveiy in Quebec; 1 per cent and 48 per cent in Ontario; 2 per cent and 45 per cent in MIanîtoba 'Sas- katchewan; 1 per cent and 39 per cent in Alberta; and 1 per cent and 40 pet cent In Britishs Columbia. CFIB vice president of researchi and chief ecanamist, Catherine Swvift, says the poil resuits directly contradict the federai gaveriinmet's "good newvs" sceniiïio that was perpetuated in the months before the GSI was imple- miented on Jan. 1, 1991, "This gaverrnment refused ta listen ta any criticism of the GST," says Swvif t, "and instead chose ta pusýh ahead with a very damiaging timetable. Former Finance Minister Michael Wil- son and Revenue Minister Otto Meines were warned timie and time again that this was a badi time ta brins2 in a bad tax. And unfortunately the economny is now payîng- the price." Swift adds that the timing- of the GSI in the middle of a serious reces- sian wasn't the government's only mis- take. "Whiat is equally damaging," she says, "is the fact that the bulk of thse problems currently fuelling the reces- sion have been instigated by the very architects of the GSI. High interest rates, a $30-billion budgetary deficit, and an overvalued exchange rate are ail products of the preserit goverfi- mient's dubiaus policies." Swift says she is angry that Wilson squandered the mnany opportunities available ta him during thee mid- ta iate-1980s, oppartunities ta get govern- mient spending under control."A a re- suIt, Ottawa is now forced ta cut back at the worst Possible timIe. "The introduction of this major nwtax hias only served ta make a troubled econamny even worse. With 45 per cent of ail households pauring- iess money inta the economy nd anly 1 per cent spending mare, it's little wodrthat this recessian is s0 severe. " Throughaut the debate leading up ta the introduction of the Janua1ry lst deadline, baoth Wilson and Jeinek wvent ta a great deal of effort ta assure con- sumners that tise effect of the GST wvould be minimal and short-lived. How,,eve!, it is now cîcar that the introduction of thse GSI shauld have been delayed until the worst of the recessian had passed. "At a timre of universal mnistrust 0,f politicians and gavernmrents across tise cautrtly," shie concludes, ",tise last thling. Canadians edws a punitive, comn- priehentsive, twýo-tiered sales tax."
