- N Bsih Bramah's ý-Ontario jack de Wit has an interesting tfrm near thre village of Brookino, north of Whitby. Simply called "The Farmii'., hundreds of young sehool children visit it every year to see livestock in a natural setting. It's flot a model farm with the latest in equipmient and al the rest of it. True, the rambling farmhouse buit in 1858 has been designated a heritage building, and the old barn has been there since 1877, but other than that it's a very average-looking farm. And that's the whole idea. t's flot supposed to be a showplace. It's just to give the very youag an idea of how domestie animals live and are cared for in most smiall farmis. The major difference is that "The Farmn" is a top-flight ag-ricultural classroom! Jack and his assistant, Monica Taylor, don't just show, the children around. They ask questions. They answer questions. It's a give and take educational experience. How to milk a goat was one of the projects on the tour. Jack gave a demonstration, then a six-year-old boy took a run at it. 1 expected himn to botch it completely, but hie did surprisingly well. Then Jack asked what the milk was used for. He's a born teacher. He doesn't mnerely give facts, hie draw.s out the aniswers. One thing 1 Iearnedi was thiat aside from making cheese and( ice cream, you cai also make soap out of the mlk. Some of the kindergarten crowd met "Rambo", the friendly bull caîf. Others saw their winter woolies on the hoof, and some shorn sheep in among those who still have their fleece. Monica took over while 1 talked to Jack for a few minutes. "You'd be surprised",, he sa id, "how little many kids know about fundamen- tals. A lot of themn think milk cornes from Becker's and meat fromi the When we went back to joini the others at the chieken coup, there were squeals of delight as somê'ý reached ini to take eggs,,righit fromn the niest. It was another new ex- perienlce for mlost of themn. The mnost popular feature came at the eaid of the tour. The bounidless energy of childhoodi was released in the hialoft. There were ropes where the kîds could swing to their heart's content, anid go flying off into the hay. About ,000 childreni a year visit Jack's place to get a true picture of a feviý aspects of life dlown on the farmi. 1 suppose to a child who has beeni brought up in the country, the're ail just ordinary things of life as time goes by. But to, an ininer city kid "The Farm" is a real eye- opener.
