4-Orono Weekly Timies, Wednesday, lune 13, 1990 Rain does not dampen Cub enthusiasm at camp Despite rain and hait, lst Orono joyment at being at their cub- vincial Park, on June 8th through Cubs gîve a positive sign of their en- jamboree, held at Dariington Pro- 1lOth. Wvest D"àurham Cub JamboiLre;; at Dari ington Christian The lst Orono Cub Group, were among, 10 groups from West Durham, at a Cub Jamboree, held at the Darington Provincial Park durîng the weekend of June 7th to 10th. In alI, about 143 cubs, together with 37 leaders, and their helpers, braved, tumultuous rain stormus, coupled wth hail stones, to teach the oubs outdoor skills, cookings, compass work, tracking and various crafts. 1Orono Cub leaders at the Jam- boree were Lynne Fi nlay, Terry Weeks, and Gord Werry. The cooks for the group were Pam Werry and Ken Dibartoiomeo.. 1Ahl of the cubs spoken to, ap- peared to be enjoying themselves immensely. Their evel of enjoy- ment was also apparent through their muddy knees, legs, and hands, which had ail been earned free from any parental admonishment. The effort, time, and personal commitment, by al the leaders,ý and helpers, working with lst Orono Cubs ' wiil assist alI the boys to bet- ter understand nature, and in work- ing together as a team. Gord's viw f Meech and bis days in the army Back in 1960, I was attached for service to the 2nd Battalion,, the Canadian Guards. The battalion was at fuît strength, and stood at close to 400 men, alI ranks. The composition of the battalion, was made up from men aIl across Canada. There were many men from On- tario, lumped together with the "Newfies", the "Herring Chokers," the tough guys from Cape Breton, the quilet one's from Saskatchewan, the "Honkies" from Alberta, "Frogs" from Quebec, who didn't like the idea of joining the Van Doos, and a sprinkling of "Lime Juicers" like myself, from "Over 'Omne". We al tried hard to get along with each other, nevertheless, sometimes our efforts were a bit ham-handed. We often called each other crude namnes, generally reflec- tive of each other's background. In today's world, our behaviour would have been considered totally unacceptabie or at least offensive. In spite of these barbs, framed as they were, it was easy to see through them, and to sense a true spirit of comradeship streaming outwards among everyone. While serving with this group of dissimilar Canadians, I received my certificate of Canadian Citizenship, during a battalion parade. Thoughts of that day, as the regimental band played O'Canada, as I stepped forward for the presen- tation, still bring a lump to my throat. The welcomne, after the parade, and the pumping hands with the others from across Canada, in- cluding those fromt Quebec, alI of them eager to welcome me, as one of them, still lives with me to this day. 1 can't believe, that this type of feeling among Canadians, can ever be destroyed through politicians arguing over the Meech Accord. Let us all hope, that we can con- tinue to live wth each other in a spirit of f riendship, whatever the eventual outcome of MeecÉ Lake happens to bc. Corner 0 0 by Rev. Marg West Christians are Peculiar People. (Or they should be) Are you as a Christian peculiar? What did God mean when He said in Deuteronomy 14:2, "For you are a holy people unto the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations of the world." In this scripture God is talking to Israel. But the whole Bi- ble is for our learning. It's an exam- pie for us té follow. Webster defines peculiar as "Ones ownf, distinctive, odd." Distinct is "Plain, clear, un- mistakably separated from anything else.'-' Odd is simply "Not paired or matched with another. " Peculair for' Christian is to be separate from things the world does,' and to do the things' God does. People who have not accepted Jesus think Christians are strange. So did 1 before Jesus came into my life and I understood (or started to understand),the word. Now people who have not accepted Jesus seeni strange to mue. They do aIl kinds of things to themselves and others that is harmi- fui to their bodies and minds. 1 used to do some of themn too, and 1icrally didn't think of the consequences. I thank God and the people who prayed for us that we are peculiar. We'd sooner pray for someone now than'curse them out, pray for salva- tion for them, than tell them to go to heIl. Lay hands on them for heal- ing or blessing, than damn them. We can do a lot of damage to ourselves and other people with the words of our mouths. Let's be edifying in our speech and actions one toward another. Christians should be separated unto God. Pecuiliar in His sight. Set apart to do the things of God, flot the world. We can't act hike Chris- tians on Sunday and be like the devil the rest of the week. If we are Christians, let's confess it and be one, pray for your families and loy- ed ones, lay bands on the sick, cast out evil spirits. But only do it in Jesus' name and IF you have the authority. The authority you receive, wvhen you ask Jesus to come into your life. Questions or Comments? Write Box 179, Orono, Bible Study, Tues- day 7:30 p.mn., 983-5962. 1~ tono a Mail Urban oea?
