In June of 1885, local merchant George M. Long purchased the lot immediately to the south of the chapel from John Beer, a carpenter, for the sumn of $60. In March of 1909, Long and his wife Estella pur- chased the building from the trustees of the Methodist Congrega- tion for $800. In April of 1910, the enterprisîng Mr. Long sold the house and both lots to Dr. William McCullough for $1 ,900. The building served as the McCullough office and residence until the doc- tor's widow sold it te Mr. and Mrs. Hartley Barlow in 195 1. During the Barlow's tenure, the building was a funeral home and residence. This building is recommended for designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for the following architectural reasons: 1. It is an example of the Classical Revival style - a style which is very rare in this area. Its imposing rec- tangular shape, hipped roof and the plasters are all characteristics of the style. 2. The original masonry is intact and executed in the common bond pattern. 3. The porch, although probably not the original, is most distinctive and shows the influence of the more fanciful exterior ornamentation of the later l9th Century. 4. It retains the stained glass of the front doors and the transom light above - features which, again, most likely date from the later l9th cen- tury, but are well preserved and worthy of note. 5. Much of the l9th Century interior woodwork and flooringremains. rimtm.
