Orono WeekIy Tinmes, Wedneuday, Junuary 31, 1990-7 then, each grave was dug by hand. .Can you imagine how much work is required of "one" man, digging, purely with a pick-axe and shovel, to keep six graves available at al times?' As a matter of interest Lynne and 1 spent our honeymoon there, (ail seven days of it! ) - in his house 1 mean, not in the cemetry?!!! Before she returned to ber base (she was in the R.A.F.) and 1 went back to sea. 1 only saw this man once more, when we visited him with our first born daughrer, before 1 went overseas again with the Commando Brigade.- His wife had died previous to this, and he lived alonc, he also died while 1 was away, - (1 think, from a broken heart,) but I've neyer forgotten the finest man I've ever known. He was my father. Just George Advertise in the Orono. Times 983-5301 The, above group of Pines Senior Canada'. Just George. 1 once knew a man wbo was in- strumental in sbaping my ife. 1 didn't really get to know him until I was in my early teens, and he would be -in bis late 50's, -but we-had alot in common, the chief example being that 1, (as you already know) joined the Royal Marines, and be was also a retired pensioner from that distinguished group of men. Because 1 was destined to travel the world in my new role, we saw each other very infrequently, and of course a war intervened, thereby aggravating our comrade-ship even further. When the bombing of London became intense be wîsely decided to selI bis bouse, and move to the "supposedly" safe tranquility of the countryside. And so he and bis wife travelled to, and bought a house in a small village, (very similar in many respects to Orono). However this peaceful area changed abruptly when a large R.A.P. air- field was constructed nearby, used almost entirely for the training of night bomber crews. It didn 't take long for the enemy to find out about this, and they fre- quently sent nigbt flyer planes over to shoot down these planes, whicb, witb untrained crews, were literally unable to protect themnselves. It just 50 happened that this man, who had been active ail his life, took on the job of grave-digger in the local cemetry. However due to the number of R.A.F. casualities, he was "requested" to have six open graves available, at ail times. Bearing in mind the fact that modern digging equipment, in corn- mon use today, wasn't available The four students involved said, "They were hard questioiis.'" The boys basketball teamn is still practising very bard and they wil pick the grade eigbt basketball teamn very scoon. Mr. Smith, Mr. Stevens and Mr. Woods are the coaches for tbe team.
