Haynes helps UIndy capture NCAA golf title by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff As the NCAA Division II championships opened, there were few golfers with as much momentum as Annika Haynes. She was coming off a second-place finish at the East Super Regional -- her third top-four finish in a month, including a third at the conference championship -- and had just been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference freshman of the year. At one point during the opening round of the national championship, the Oakville native birdied four of five holes on her way to a 73 that left her tied for third place. But the momentum stalled when she shot an 84 the next day to drop to 24th. "She was really upset after that second round," said University of Indianapolis Greyhounds coach Brent Nicoson. "All her teammates gathered around her and said, `You carried us all year, it's our turn to carry you.'" Though Haynes shot an 80 the next day , she bounced back to deliver the second-best round of the tournament on the final day , firing a one-under 71 that helped the Greyhounds capture the national title. "She'll do that," Nicoson said. "She's not afraid to play in big tournaments. She's a gamer and when the lights come on, she's ready. That's just how she's wired." It didn't take the Greyhounds coach long to figure that out. He knew he had a strong incoming group with Haynes, Paxton DeHaven and Karli LaGrotte -- ranked the second-best recruiting class in the country. But even Nicoson was surprised by the instant success of the Greyhound freshmen. DeHaven won the season's first tournament, and Haynes -- following up on her sixth-place finish -- won the second, the Greyhounds' UIndy Fall Classic, by shooting rounds of 76 and 73 to top a field of 102 golfers. The Iroquois Ridge grad would go on to record nine top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments in her rookie season. She finished the year with a scoring average of 77.2 but bettered that mark in eight of her final 11 rounds of the season. "She's not only a leader on the course, she's a super kid to have on our team," Nicoson said. "She's a model student, a model teammate." Haynes had fallen to 34th place entering the final round of the national championship. And though Indy's 11-stroke lead looked comfortable at the beginning of the day , Rollins College posted the best single-day team score of the tournament, cutting the Greyhounds' lead to five. Haynes' 71, one of only four underpar rounds in the tournament, helped to hold off the challenge and lock up Indy's first national team title in any sport. The last time the Jr. B lacrosse squad squared off against Brampton, the Excelsiors scored last second goals in both the second and third periods to edge the Buzz 9-8. So when Brampton rallied from a 6-3 third-period deficit to tie the game, it looked like Oakville might be due for some more heartbreak. "I had hit the post a couple of times," said Eddie Renaud, who had been held goalless through the first 50 minutes. "Actually our whole offence had hit the post quite a few times." Renaud found the ideal time to find the mesh, though. His goal with 5:42 to play broke the 6-6 tie and he added another 37 seconds later. He capped his natural hat trick with an empty netter as the Buzz won Wednesday's game 9-6. "It was nice to get a little revenge on them," said Renaud, who has scored at least twice in each of his six games this season. The win improve the Buzz to 4-5 on the season, with three of those wins coming in the last four. Each of those victories saw the Buzz tied in the third period only to score the winner in the latter half of the period.
