Masterworks of Oakville celebrates 10th anniversary with concerts Masterworks of Oakville chorus and orchestra is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a pair of concerts this weekend. The milestone concert will be broadcast on television and feature a choir of 60 members and an orchestra of 70 musicians, which will perform Francis Poulenc's Gloria, Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Masterworks' Maestro Charles Demuynck's Alerion. "This is a particularly exciting program for several reasons: to perform Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms is a wonderful challenge for us, and to do it along with Picasso's works displayed will be a truly special event for the audience," said Demuynck. "Secondly, to have Oakville's own Tessa Laengert-Ruta perform in Poulenc's Gloria will be wonderful, it's an amazing piece and Tessa is a particularly exciting performer. "Finally, I'm delighted to conduct my own composition Alerion. The orchestra is playing this difficult piece very well, and I hope that the audience response will be just as overwhelmingly positive as at the world premiere at St. Matthew's in 2010." Soprano Laengert-Ruta grew up in Oakville and attended both the Oakville Christian School and Oakville Trafalgar High School. She was part of the Oakville Children's Choir from age six to 11 and then joined the Canadian Children's Opera in Toronto. "The chance to do this repertoire anywhere is truly a gift and I am thrilled to be performing it in Oakville," Laengert-Ruta said. The concerts will be held Saturday (May 23) at 8 p.m. and Sunday (May 24) at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1150 Monks Passage. Special guests attending performances During the Saturday evening performance, Mayor Rob Burton will attend to formally recognize Masterworks' milestone anniversary, while Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn will be at Sunday's concert to congratulate the local music group.
