Oakville's newest public elementary school is named Oodenawi The Halton District School Board (HDSB) has selected names for two new elementary schools currently under construction in Milton and Oakville. Earlier this spring, board trustees selected Boyne Public School to be the name of a Milton school under construction on Farmstead Drive. In Oakville, an elementary school currently under construction on Sixteen Mile Drive will be named Oodenawi Public School. Both names were unanimously supported. "We believe the names chosen reflect the history, culture and geography of the area," said HDSB Chair Kelly Amos. In Milton, for example, Boyne Public School refers to the community of Boyne, located south of the school's future site, at Regional Road 25 and Britannia Road. The community was named after the Boyne River in northeast Ireland, as Irish settlers first arrived in Halton from that area circa 1818. Oodenawi Public School is derived from the Ojibwe term, `community'. The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations, part of a larger group called the Anishinabe, were the original people that resided in Halton. The Oakville land was part of the 1805 Toronto Purchase and the 1806 Head of the Lake Purchase between the Crown and the Mississaugas. Amos said the historical derivations should help make these schools "great learning communities for our students." The names were selected as part of the HDSB's policy Naming Schools. Submissions were reviewed by several committees, who gathered the names from suggestion boxes in schools, public libraries and online. More information regarding the construction of the new schools can be found on the Halton District School Board website at www. hdsb.ca. 19 | Friday, May 22, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com June 19th, Trilingual.
