Oakville council declared the Ward 6 Town councillor seat vacant following the sudden death of Max Khan at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital March 29. Council opted to fill the position through a by-election set to take place Monday, July 13. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 29. There has been no shortage of interest in the council seat with Oakville chiropractor Natalia Lishchyna (votenatalia.ca) declaring her candidacy early on. Lishchyna is best known for challenging Eve Adams for the Conservative nomination in the new Oakville North-Burlington federal riding. Khan's brother and chiropractor Mansoor Khan threw his hat into the ring not long after. Local consultant and economist Linda Nazareth (lindanazareth.com) has also joined the race. Nazareth ran against Ward 5 Town Councillor Marc Grant in last fall's municipal election. Iroquois Ridge Residents' Association President and IT specialist John Paulic joined the contenders May 1. Paulic, a 10 year Ward 6 resident, ran against Gary Carr for the position of Halton Region chair last fall. Gurinder Singh (www.voteforgurinder.ca) joined the race on May 15. Though semi-retired, Singh's background includes time spent in the civil and electrical engineering, computer programming and business management fields. He said his last job saw him serve as a manager in a Samsung Repair Centre. Singh challenged Khan during the recent municipal election. Oakville electrical engineer Asjad Hussain is also seeking the Ward 6 councillor seat. He said he is president of Amal Foundation Canada, which carries out community building through social work and various events throughout the year. Hussain said he is also vice chair of the Canadian Association of Pakistan Origin, which provides services and resources in the community for new immigrants and seniors. Advance polls for the by-election will take place on Saturday, June 20; Tuesday June 23; and Wednesday, June 24.
