Oakville council unanimously endorsed a 2015 budget of more than $1.5 million for its three business improvement areas (BIAs) during a special council meeting on Monday (May 4). The money, approved at a special council meeting this month, was levied from local businesses by the Downtown Oakville, Bronte Village and Kerr Village BIAs. It will fund the promotion and improvement of the respective business districts through business promotion, tourism, events and street beautification. "Our BIAs play vital roles in each of their communities," said Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- Town council unanimously approves a total $1.5M in BIA budgets ton. "Their contributions are critical to the successful promotion and enhancement of the economic, historic and cultural vitality of their business and shopping districts." The 2015 budget of $871,285 for the Downtown Oakville BIA will go to beautification projects, such as improvements to Christmas lighting, flowers and winter hanging baskets, as well as marketing, advertising and enhanced website and social interaction technologies. The Bronte Village BIA levied $334,750. This will go towards marketing and advertising, beautification and event spending, including improved light poles, new flags/ banners, a vacant space façade mural, and a second full-time employee. Kerr Village BIA levied $373,874 for 2015 for administration costs, event and promotion and beautification expenses. The BIAs are specially-funded business districts and are local boards of the municipality. The BIA Boards of Management provide for the promotion of the areas as business or shopping areas and for improvement, beautification, and maintenance beyond that provided at the expense of the municipality. Under the Municipal Act, council must adopt estimates of all sums required during the year for its own purposes and those of its local boards.
