"Choose Brenda Martin 'Miss Six Nations'"

A buckskin-dressed Indian maid, Brenda Martin, of R6, Hagersville, was unanimously chosen "Miss Six Nations" on Thursday night at a beauty contest held on the stage of the Capitol Theatre.

The contest was one of a numbers of special events held to mark "Jay Silverheels Night." Brantford-born Jay, better known in this area as Harry Smith, plays Tonto in the first feature-length motion picture of "The Lone Ranger."

A capacity audience say Miss Martin win the title over 13 other contestants. Runners-up were Janet Garlow, second, and Jane Lickers, third. Both are of Ohsweken.

Judges were Mrs. Marion George, women's editor, Radio Station CKPC; Miss Wynn Matthews, women's editor of The Expositor, and Alderman Max Sherman.

Each of the winners was presented with a mantel radio. In addition, Miss Martin received flowers. Presentations were made by Mrs. Oliver Smith, sister of Jay Silverheels. All other contestants received nylons.

Theatre manager Bill Burke, through special arrangement with the Bell Telephone Company, completed a long-distance call from the stage to the Beverly Hills, California, home of Jay Silverheels.

On stage to speak to him were Mrs. Smith and a brother, Leslie. Seated in the audience were two other brothers, Hugh and Cecil.

The entire audience was able to hear the conversation over the theatre's public address system.

Jay, who has been in Hollywood more than 15 years, explained the intricacies of producing a large-scale motion picture.

He also described some of the parts of the country where he has been on location for the numerous pictures he has made, as well as life in Hollywood.

He noted that he is "not much of a night-clubber."

The Six Nations Indian Band, under the direction of Walter Lickers, played before and after the beauty contest.

Huron Miller ("Hiawatha"), one of the better known of Indian tribal dancers, performed several dances.

During the beauty contest, music was provided by the Al Gallagher Trio.

Master of Ceremonies was Charlie Doerring, of CKPC.
