Laurie Smith, a Registered Nurse (RN) in palliative care from Ian Anderson House and Carpenter Hospice was recognized as Halton's Nurse of the Year in Community (Primary) Care. Carolyn Murton, am RN from Halton Healthcare Services (HHS Oakville), was awarded Halton's Nurse of the Year in Acute Care award. The RNAO Halton Chapter invited all healthcare organizations in the region to nominate a nurse. Nominations were received from nursing colleagues, managers, directors and patients and were reviewed by the RNAO Halton Chapter executive members. The winning nominations reflected values such as client advocacy, patient-centered care, life-long learning, and a collaborative approach to care, according to a media release. Murton works at the Child and Youth Outpatient Mental Health Program in Oakville and delivers clinical care to clients living with mental health issues. "Carolyn projects a warm and compassionate attitude towards her patients and goes above and beyond to advocate for their needs," Sarah Robertson, who nominated Murton for the award, said in the media release. Smith, from Burlington, has worked in Carpenter Hospice and Ian Anderson House -- her current role as the co-ordinator of resident intake and hospice referrals. "Laurie demonstrates sensitivity and compassion in patient and family interactions about the difficult decisions surrounding a move to hospice for end of life care," stated the release.
