The situation rapidly got worse when Evan stopped breathing, went limp and began to turn blue. A short distance away, Halton police Constable Rick Buys was conducting a traffic stop when he heard Bragg's call over his radio. "I ran up to the van I had pulled over and just threw the licence and the ticket in and said I had to go. I don't even think they knew what I said I was running so fast," said Buys. "When I pulled into the parking lot and saw the mom, obviously Kelly was pretty frantic and she handed Evan to me saying, `Please help my baby.'" Bragg talked about what was going through her mind as she handed her child to Buys. "I thought that was it. I thought we lost him," she said. "He was really blue. I was just beside myself." Buys got Evan out of the heavy wind placing him in the back of the police cruiser where he began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after finding that the six-week-old had no pulse and was not breathing. Buys said he has no idea how long he performed CPR on Evan stating that "You get tunnel vision in a stressful situation like this one." He continued CPR until an ambulance arrived, at which point Evan was taken inside. "The three of us continued working on him. Maybe a minute or two went by. They had gotten a tube down his throat and that seemed to clear his airway," said Buys. "He gave a cough and started to cry. We were all pretty relieved." Evan was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and later to SickKids Children's It's that call you will always remember, years after you retire. I will never forget April 19. He underwent several tests and appears to be back to normal. Bragg said doctors told her it is possible the heavy wind had obstructed Evan's breathing and that because he was so young he didn't know how to clear his throat or catch his breath. Bragg said she is just happy her child is alive and is grateful to Buys and the other first responders who made that happen. "Words are so insufficient for the gratitude we have towards him and the whole responding team," she said. "It was incredible. Everybody knew exactly what to do and were right on top of it and held their composure so amazingly. It is thanks to them that we still have Evan with us." Buys, a 26-year veteran of the Halton Regional Police Service, said he has performed CPR on adults before, but never a baby or child. He said he doesn't think of himself as a hero stating this was probably the scariest call he has ever been on. "It was the most rewarding call I have ever done as well," said Buys.
