McLaughlin didn't start for Victoria until third year with team continued from p.28 through a university training program. Though Beauchamp saw potential in McLaughlin, the Vikes coach wanted to make sure he would be ready to compete against university players. "Not everybody succeeds just because they have potential," Beauchamp said. "They have to have persistence and I was happy to see Chris did. That's not always the case. Guys get discouraged and they start to look for greener pastures. But Chris's persistence paid off for him, and for us." Bided his time with Vikes McLaughlin played his final game in a Vikes uniform at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships in March. He scored 22 points and added 14 rebounds in an 82-68 loss to the Ryerson Rams in the bronze-medal game. It ended a year in which McLaughlin played 33.2 minutes per game, averaging 19.8 points and 10.0 rebounds, while finishing among the top eight in the conference in both blocks and field-goal percentage. He was named a first-team all-Canadian, the Canada West player of the year and the University of Victoria's male athlete of the year. It was quite a rise for a player who had not even started a game until two years earlier. But for McLaughlin, the path of his career was not something he ever worried about. Born in Tsawwassen, B.C., where the ferry leaves the mainland for Vancouver Island, McLaughlin moved to Oakville when he was seven years old. When he was in Grade 11, McLaughlin was drawing attention from universities. During a trip to visit his grandma, he took the ferry to Victoria and met with Beauchamp. Though his brother, Geoff, had played at McMaster, McLaughlin was sold on the west coast. "Once I met with the coach and learned about the history of the program, there was nowhere else for me." And with that was knowing what lay in store for him. "When I went there, I knew the process," he said. "They had older vets who played 10 (rebounds) every game." And sometimes more. McLaughlin delivered career bests in points (32) and rebounds (17) in an 80-71 win over Brandon in February. In the playoffs, he had double-doubles in six of the Vikes' seven post-season games, including a 70-67 victory over Saskatchewan in the Canada West final. "We had struggled with them all season," McLaughlin said. "(To win Canada West after two straight runner-up finishes) in my last year, it was a huge highlight." Already negotiating with European teams McLaughlin hopes there are many highlights to come. Having completed his studies in Earth and Ocean Science, McLaughlin is spending the summer in Victoria to work with the Vikes' coaching staff. McLaughlin has attracted interest from teams in Europe, though he says any negotiations are in the beginning stages. Still, he'll take the opportunity to work on his game until something is finalized. "There's always room for improvement," he said. "I've improved in the physical aspect and being able to battle and being able to find a way to score inside and outside. I can still improve my overall post game and my shot is definitely something I'll continue to work on." McLaughlin made more than half of his three-pointers (12-for-23) in the final 11 games of the season. The ability to score from the perimeter gives him an advantage over most players his size and leaves Beauchamp feeling very confident about McLaughlin's chances of succeeding as a pro. "His game is very transferrable to FIBA," he said. "He can play inside-outside. Chris can make the three, which is a skill that's not easy to find among big men. He can most definitely have a very successful pro career." 29 | Friday, May 8, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Minor Ball Hockey League Standings as of May 1, 2015 GP 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 GP 2 2 2 2 2 2 GP 2 2 2 2 2 2 GP 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 GP 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 GP 3 3 3 3 3 3 W 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 W 2 1 1 1 0 0 W 2 1 1 1 1 0 W 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 0 W 2 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 W 3 3 1 0 0 0 L 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 L 0 0 1 1 1 2 L 0 1 1 1 1 2 L 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 L 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 2 L 0 0 1 2 2 2 T 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 T 0 1 0 0 1 0 T 0 0 0 0 0 0 T 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 T 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 0 T 0 0 1 1 1 1 WIN % 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 WIN % 1 0.75 0.5 0.5 0.25 0 WIN % 1 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0 WIN % 1 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0 WIN % 1 0.75 0.75 0.75 0.25 0.25 0.25 0 WIN % 1 1 0.5 0.167 0.167 0.167 PTS 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 PTS 4 3 2 2 1 0 PTS 4 2 2 2 2 0 PTS 4 2 2 2 2 2 2 0 PTS 4 3 3 3 1 1 1 0 PTS 6 6 3 1 1 1 GF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 GF 12 9 19 9 3 2 GF 12 11 17 11 11 4 GF 14 9 6 18 6 7 6 7 GF 11 7 7 5 11 5 3 1 GF 27 18 4 4 6 3 GA 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 GA 5 3 10 16 8 12 GA 6 6 11 16 10 17 GA 2 6 10 5 10 8 20 12 GA 7 2 3 2 13 8 8 7 GA 3 4 3 11 21 20 DIFF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 DIFF 7 6 9 -7 -5 -10 DIFF 6 5 6 -5 1 -13 DIFF 12 3 -4 13 -4 -1 -14 -5 DIFF 4 5 4 3 -2 -3 -5 -6 DIFF 24 14 1 -7 -15 -17 Learn to Play 3-6 (2009-2012) Team A1-LTP JumpStart Flyers (Orange) A2-LTP Play It Again Sports Bruins (Yellow) A3-LTP Montana's Cookhouse Kings (Silver) A4-LTP National Sports Canucks (Light Blue) A5-LTP Penguins (Vegas) A6-LTP Maple Leafs (Blue) A7-LTP Canadiens (Red) A8-LTP Black Hawks (Black) Tyke 7-8 (2007-2008) Team B3-Fitness Firm Blue Lightning B1-Tyke Mainway Sports (Yellow) B6-Black Bears B5-Tyke Julian Dean Photography (Red) B4-Goal Diggers (Vegas) B2-Just Shoot It Orange Crush Novice 9-10 (2005-2006) Team C2-Novice (Light Blue) C1-Novice Tripemco Insurance (Orange) C5-Novice Centre Ice Training Academy (Blue) C4-Novice (Yellow) C3-Novice Jigsaw Advertising & Marketing (Silver) C6-Oakville Beaver Red Hot Chilli Peppers Atom 11-12 (2003-2004) Team D1-Atom Granite Ridge Golf Club (Yellow) D5-Atom (Vegas) D2-Atom (Orange) D7-Atom Burlington Post (Red) D3-Atom Fitness Firm (Light Blue) D6-Atom Dynamic Healing Therapy Services (Blue) D8-Atom Wave Shop (Black) D4-Atom ImpactDesign.ca (Green) Peewee 13-14 (2001-2002) Team E5-Peewee (Vegas) E4-Peewee Jigsaw Advertising & Marketing (Red) E2-Peewee TheCoverGuy (Orange) E8-Peewee Vacuum Shoppe (Black) E3-Peewee (Light Blue) E7-Peewee (Green) E6-Peewee Fitness Firm (Blue) E1-South Hill Designs Yellow Jackets Bantam/Junior 15-18 (1997-2000) Team F2-Bt/Jr Burlington Ball Hockey League (Orange) F3-Bt/Jr (Vegas) F4-Bt/Jr (Blue) F5-Bt/Jr RepBallHockey.com (Red) F6-Bt/Jr SportsBuzz (Black) F1-Bt/Jr S.E. (The first two years) helped me prepare for the physicality of the CIS, battling with those guys every day in practice." McLaughlin's time came in November of his third year, when he started against the University of the Fraser Valley and scored 22 points -- one less than he scored in his entire rookie season. "That was a big turning point," he said. "There was pressure being put into that situation, but it turned out to be the perfect opportunity. To come out that first weekend and have a 20-point game, it was a big boost of confidence." He went on to finish the season among the top 10 in the conference in rebounds per game (8.3), blocks and field-goal percentage. Also, the Vikes reached the Canada West final and the CIS tournament for the first time in seven years. The next year, McLaughlin again led the team in rebounding while upping his points per game from 12.1 to 15.1 and earning Canada West second-team honours. This past season, McLaughlin was the undisputed on-court leader for the Vikes. "He changed the game defensively, being someone who can block shots or alter shots, and rebounding he was really dominant," Beauchamp said. "Much of what we did offensively ran through Chris. He was a guy you could count on for 20 (points) and This ad is courtesy of & Proud Supporters Soccer Player Development for competitive open age and over 30 Male Outdoor Leagues.
