www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 8, 2015 | 12 Theatrical simulation stimulates mental illness dialogue continued from p.8 to me. It was frightening. I went to school as if I was wearing a mask, I tried to act as if I was happy. But I was just churning inside. It was awful. "At school, I would put this mask on, but when I came home I would withdraw from everybody, including my wife. All I would want to do was sleep. I was always tired and didn't want to do anything or socialize. We lost a lot of friends." The ironic thing was, like many people living with depression, Duncan took great enjoyment from helping others, which is why his dream job was to become a teacher. But a clash with a superior at work nearly caused him to give up that dream job and that was the final trigger to his depression. He also developed a severe arthritic condition in his back and that prevented him from running, another thing he loved to do. He also has a personality that is common among those suffering from depression. "I have a personality where I like to do things so people will respond to me and make me feel good," Duncan said. "But it's also something that those prone to depression have." As is often the case amongst men, it was difficult for Duncan to admit he needed help. "I thought it would just pass. But my wife was incredibly supportive and it was she who encouraged me to seek medical help because she could see how I was just crashing when I came home," Duncan said. "I can honestly say that medication saved my life, but having friends and a wife that you can totally talk to about it, is absolutely crucial, as well as exercise and some quiet, downtime alone. "For me, meditation has been a key, as well as volunteering. It gives me great satisfaction." Al Duncan Offer expires June 5th 2015. Must bring in this ad.
