Lee and 48 other teenagers arc the first crop of winners in the new Miss Teen Canada Scholarship pageant. The Glen Abbey resident represented her hometown in the competition held in London. Ont., in June. Although she fin ished out of the top ten, she was rewarded with a $5,000 scholarship for her second year at the University of Western Ontario. While canvassing door-to-door for an abused children's charity in London, where she is attending university, Lee met Julie Marcellin. Marcellin is the national director of Canada Pageants, which organizes the Miss Teen Canada Scholarship pageant, as well as Mrs. Canada International and Ms. National Canada. After filling in an application and Com pleting a phone interview. Lee was given the nod to represent Oakville and invited to compete for the national title June 1622. Commitment to community and family are the basis of the competition, as well as promoting the pursuit of higher education. While the pageant's Web site www.canadapageants.com boasts the eradication of the traditional swimsuit component and weighs 40 per cent of the scoring on the interview, the teenaged girls are judged a full 60 per cent on their appearance in evening, fitness and fashion wear. They are also required to pay an entry fee and buy or find sponsorship for an ad in the competition's program book. After the glamour of a photo shoot cocktail party, hotel and limousine ride, plus meeting teenaged girls from all over the country, Lee has already put her com petition platform into action. Between her second year studies in sociology and criminology at Western. Lee is also the newly-chosen youth advo cate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). "It has all been so motivating to be acknowledged for all the good work we've done and to be encouraged to do more." said L ee.. Over the next year she'll use the skills gleaned from volunteering at a Mississauga women's shelter, and as a camp counsellor and girls' soccer coach to impress upon people the dangers of driv ing while intoxicated. Time spent in front of the cameras as a volunteer at a local cable television show and at university, has made Lee a natural public speaker for the various MADD events she'll be attending. Her confidence comes from the sup port of a loving family. "My mom (Eileen) is my best friend, my sister (Monica) is my other half and my dad (Richard) is a carbon copy of my personality." said Lee. The whole pageant experience has solidified Lee's goal to pursue a career in broadcast media. But then there is also that niggling lifetong dream of becoming an actress.
