Residents lose Cogeco service after grass fire Saturday by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, April 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com It's brush fire season and a trio of weekend grass fires saw one blaze cause thousands of residents to lose cable and Internet service Saturday night, another shot flames 15 feet into the air near Saw-Whet Golf Course, and another saw firefighters called by the dozen to fight it. Many Oakville residents were among 14,000 impacted by the loss of their cable television, Internet and digital phone service Saturday after a blaze occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the Dundas Street/407 area of Burlington. The fire damaged four hydro poles and resulted in the interruption of service to Cogeco customers in Oakville, Milton and Burlington. The Burlington Fire Department estimated the damage cost to be in the area of $300,000. Halton police charged a 14-year-old male with arson in connection with the blaze. Meanwhile in Oakville another brush fire occurred the same day in a ravine near SawWhet golf course in the Bronte and Upper Middle roads area. The Oakville Fire Department was called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. where firefighters discovered about an acre of brush ablaze. "Flames were visible 15 feet in the air," said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Durdin. "We had to use our Centaur, our off-road Flames were visible 15 feet in the air. We had to use our Centaur, our off-road vehicle, to get back in there. It's a specialty vehicle. It has a water tank on it plus a pump. It's an eightwheeled, track-driven machine... that's used to put out fires in places we can't get a truck. Deputy Chief Brian Durdin Oakville Fire Department No one was injured during this fire and its cause is also unknown. "It's just the season.... Even though you think it's fairly wet there is a lot of dead grass and dead brush and it doesn't take much to get stuff going," said Durdin. "We get tons of grass fires early spring. Mainly because the deadfall from last year is tinder dry even though the ground below it is soaking wet." People are advised to be careful around wooded areas where accumulated debris could be a spark away from becoming an inferno and urged to use safety and not discard cigarette butts, matches or other flammable material in wooded or grassy areas. vehicle, to get back in there. Durdin said it took 16 firefighters several hours to extinguish the brush fire. Its cause is unknown. Around the same time, another fire ignited in a ravine near Sheltered Oak Court in the Dundas Street and Neyagawa Boulevard area. Ten firefighters were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the fire without incident. Durdin said the fire department had to contact the Oakville Forestry Department to remove some trees killed by the fire so they would not pose a hazard to people in the future.
