Mayor delivers economic update at Chamber breakfast by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 19 | Thursday, April 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville's economy is booming and its nances are strong and stable. These were two highlights in a glowing report on the town's economic outlook delivered by Mayor Rob Burton during the Oakville Chamber of Commerce Mayor's Breakfast at the Argus Road Holiday Inn April 10. A sold-out crowd of 200 people gathered to hear the mayor's update on the town's status, which began with Burton boasting that businesses and people want to call Oakville home. "We continuously work to improve our livability by challenging the status quo," said the mayor. "How we challenge the status quo is by controlling growth, debt and taxes to just what ts economically and environmentally. We continuously increase the ef ciencies with which we do what we do because we know this town doesn't want to spend a penny more than it has to enjoy the ne services that it wants to have from its municipal government." According to Burton, Oakville has been successful in attracting high quality new jobs and companies and growing established companies. In 2014, Burton said, Oakville businesses created 1,700 jobs, which exceeded the Town's annual goal of 1,000 jobs created annually. The lion's share of these jobs came when Ford of Canada announced in October that it would add 1,000 jobs to the Oakville plant to build the 2015 Ford Edge crossover SUV for global markets. The town's unemployment rate of 4.4 per cent for 2014 was also singled out by Burton as the lowest in Ontario. The mayor noted Oakville is also succeeding in its goal of bringing advanced manufacturing, see Future on p.24 Dr. Vanessa Milich & Associates Family Dental Care Encouraging Healthy and Happy Smiles Caring for Oakville Families for 10 years Welcoming New Patients Evening and Saturday Appointments - Conventional Oil Change (With Spin-On Filter, Up To 5L) Queensbury Dental 905.849.8449 Dundas St. Oakmead - Check Filters - Basic 20 Pt Vehicle Inspection - Lube Serviceable Components $24.99* n Trafalgar Rd. *Add $25.00 for Synthetic Oil, Taxes Extra UP TO $100 IN MAIL-IN REBATES AND THE LOWEST PRICES GUARANTEED!
