10 THE EARRIE EXAMINER THURSDAI SEPT 15 1368 SPORTS COMMENT Back To Ten Teams lis Grads Reconsider By CHRIS AYLOTT After more than their share of unceriainty and delays the revamped OHA Senior hockey circuit re oeived shot in the arm yesterday The new Toronto lyeutry which was forced to withdraw two weeks ago veame back into the fold bringing membership up to ihe full strength of 10 teams Problems for the fledgling club developed when organizer Joe Kane informed the OHA at general meeting that Toronto could not meet the heavy de mands of iOgame schedule He proposed that his team play an abbreviated slate of 24 games with four pointers This was promptly rejected by the other nine entries and Kane was voted out YESTERDAYS change of heart was accompanied by definite plans The Toronto team which will be known as Varsity Grads willplay home games at the modern North York Centennial Centre near the Junc tion of Highway 400 and Finch Avenue Grads de cision has brought Queen City team into the OHA senior company after an absence of 16 years when the senior Marlboro captured the Allan Cup Kane who once coached Varsity Blues will handle the bench boss duties for Grads The team which will open at home Oct 10 expects to have real cross wsection of occupations on its roster including school teachers lawyers law students chartered accountants doctors and dentists Backing the team is group of Toronto business men including Steve Stavro president of the Toronto City pro soccer club Hockey fans in this area are in for an interesting season as the OHA boldly has amalgamatetd the Con tral Ontario teams with the Senior western section and added two new faces Nine teams will visit Bar rie Arena this year big improvement from the fans oint of view with only three opponents facing the ocals in the season ast The local entry has resur rected the Flyers nic name made famous few years back when Hap Emms brought the Memorial Cup to Barrie ANOTHER NEW CHALLENGE is the greater travel liog as the expanded loop is geographically spread from Woodst0c in the west to Kingston and Belleville in the east Flyers will also retain their traditional rivalry with Bill ItIcGiIls OrilIia Pcpsis and Jack Griers Collingwood Shipbuiiders The Flyer executive has regretfully announced the resignation of coach lack Dytc The personable 0ril lia resident will be greatly missed as in his tenure here he displayed ability to bring the best out of tho available talent In 1965 Dytc sparked SevenUps to nearmiss of the Centrai Ontario senior playoff title The lomls rallied late in the season to barge into the fourth and final playoff slot on the very last day They rocecded to bounce the veteranladen Orillia squad in five games and then taxed Coilingwood Shipbuildcrs to the limit in that memorable final series Barrie cau ht the highlyfavored Shipbuilders off guard and nab ed lead forcing the defending champion to take the next four in row Nona will soon forget that night in Colilngwood Arena when Harry It plo Checks Lumloy came thorugh with miracu ous save Ho robbed little Norm Furlong at pointblank rangc with seconds remaining in regulation time of the deciding game Shipbuilders then went on to take the title to overtime with senior heckoy talent spread over 10 teams anything could happen Barrio is going all out to give the established Senior teams strong challenge Manager Jim Short and his assistant Larry Wood have been working hard all summer searching for new play ing talent it is make or brcak year for senior hockey in Ontario and Barrio in particular Condi tions are ripe for banner season with lots of variety coming into the local ice palace it is now up to the fans to show that top flight hockey belongs in Barrie Continued support is essential to survival BITS
