After receiving significant feedback from residents at the March 10 Planning and Development council meeting, Town council decided to hold off its look at the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape (DTS) Study final report to give people more time to delve into it. The item was deferred to Monday, April 13 to allow the public more time to make presentations before council makes a decision. "Council's focus is to ensure Oakville continues to have an attractive, vibrant and economically-stable downtown," said Mayor Rob Burton. "We truly value the input from our residents and business owners -- this input ensures the revitalization of the downtown streetscape embodies Oakville's livability." The report includes staff recommendations for a master plan that addresses all streets in the downtown study area, including a preferred option for Lakeshore Road East reconstruction. Among the recommendations are those for wider boulevards, improved accessibility options, an on-street cycling network, improvements to street tree planting, streetscape furnishings and materials, and conversions from one-way to two-way streets. "Public consultation has been critical in the development of the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study options over the last year; and we're not done," said Jane Clohecy , Oakville's community development commissioner. "Throughout the engineering design phase, we'll be going back to the public to ask for feedback on furnishings and street materials, and we'll be having conversations on how to minimize the construction impact on downtown businesses, residents and visitors." Clohecy said the April Planning and Development meeting would serve as another opportunity for residents and business owners to address council on the downtown study. The staff report and study reports are available on the Town's website at www.oakville.ca. Hard copies are available at Town Hall and at all Oakville Public Library branches.
