Campaign has raised $11,000 for Children's Wish, Children's Cancer Canada Continued from pg. 36 Mann also used the AMA as an opportunity to launch a fundraising campaign for two organizations, the Children's Wish Foundation and Childhood Cancer Canada. "I always had the intention of playing it forward when the time was right," Mann said. "Five years was a big milestone in terms of my treatment and good health, so I thought it was a good time to help out two organizations that had a huge impact on me and my family." The Children's Wish Foundation sent Mann and his family to Hawaii while he was recovering from his chemotherapy treatments. Childhood Cancer Canada provided a network of cancer patients and survivors that he could speak to, helping him anticipate what was to come and answer any questions he had as well as providing financial support for him to continue his education at Queen's University, where he is studying electrical engineering. The campaign has been an overwhelming success, so much so that Mann decided to extend it by a week (ending Friday evening). Claire LaRocca of Tilt Canada, the fundraising site Mann is using, said the average Canadian campaign raises approximately $480. Since launching his on Mar. 5, Mann has raised $11,310, which he will split between the two charities. "It's done a lot better than expected," the 22-year-old said. "I didn't really put a target on it but I thought if it got some support, maybe (I'd raise) $5,000. I've been blown away with the amount I've been able to raise." Mann said it felt good to reassure people through the AMA that they can continue to live a productive life. Though he didn't get a baseball scholarship as he had hoped, Mann did pitch three seasons at Queen's and plans to return after taking this year off. Among the questions Mann was asked: What is the chance of reoccurrence of your cancer? A: The chemotherapy killed about 99% of the cancerous cells in my bone. How did your friends/classmates respond? A: Everyone around me really came together to support me. All of this was facilitated by teachers at my high school, coaches of teams I played for, and the rest by my friends. I was quite fortunate to have so many people behind me. I work in pediatric oncology. Any advice on making (patients) happy? A: I think games, tv, and just interacting with the kids for longer periods of time makes a huge difference. (Nurses) also made the younger kids laugh a lot. I think that really brings up a lot of patients' spirits because it shows how invested you are in making them feel and get better. Mann said the AMA provided some closure, though it did bring back some painful memories. "On that day I had some flashbacks, some very vivid moments from when I was going through treatment," he said. "Obviously I'm incredibly happy I've made it five years. I'm sure appreciative I'm doing as well as I am." Now he'd like to show that appreciation by helping those who helped him.
