By SlE BLRKF Examiner Staff Reporter After two years of study Georgian College law and security students put their theories to work recently in police departments across Sini coeCounty They travelled on police patrols helped identification officers in investigations and watched police deal with the public In the last eight days everything we had learned in the last two years pulled together say Terry Moore and Marie Deans two students assigned to the Barrie city police department Things we were taught last September that didnt seem too important at the time have become useful in the last week both said in an inter view at the end of their week with police The students worked with police in week of practical lwrning as the culmination of their twoyear program There will be second workweek in March In preparation students study law the legal system public relations and community Georgian ollege law and security students Marie Deans left and Terry Moore right dressed in auxiliary uniforms spent part of week recently talking to students in Barrie public schools about their work with police The unarmed combat and sociology reportwriting services psychology security and say the two They said the course repared them for what they would experience in their week with police We went into it knowing it wasnt all like Star sky and Hutch on television We knew about the reports that had to be completed at the end of each shift and about the occurence books the men use in keeping regular reports said Miss Moore The two women worked with the crime prevention bureau safety patrol officer identifica tion men and court officer in addition to working regular day and night patrols KEPT LOGS Both kept log books recording each days experiences which were initialled by supervising officers at the end of each shift Those books will provide the basis of reports the students will present to their instructors The two wanted to be police officers before spending the eight days with the Barrie city force and after week of prac tical experience neither one has changed her mind girls were expose to different facets of police work in their eight days of shift work and handled situations ranging from domestic complaints to classes of curious children Ex aminer Photo Georgian College students utting theories to wor Ive been interested in police work since about Grade but when graduated in Grade 12 worked for while before deciding to go back to school said Miss Deans She decided to take course in police work rather than im mediately applying to force wanted an idea of what it would be like before making the decision tojoin she said Miss Moore had applied to be cadet in the Peel Regional Force before joining the Georgian course and was in terested in all facets of police work Both say what they have learned from the course is in valuable no matter what direc tion their future take If anything it will make us better citizens said Miss Deans In week of varied police ex periences both also discovered specific areas of interest The lay we spent with the iden tification officers really in terested me said Miss Deans The exhibits and photographs they work with fascinate me For Miss Moore work in community services or the juvenile branch of police work interests her became really interested in the idea of public relations during the time we spent with Constable Gary Logan in crime prevention and the youth bureau she said GOOD AND BAD The two also learned on daytoday basis the good and bad points of thejob Shift work and the fact its really 24houraday job are the main problems we saw said Miss Moore Comments from bystanders not all of them complimentary are another aspect of the job they soon learned You have to be able to deal with any comments and be able to put down lot of emotions on the job said Miss Moore would say you learn to deal with that with experience omments the two received during the week while out on patrol indicated they werent taken too seriously both say Inside the force weve been accepted quite well as potential police officers and women she said But on the streets there were lot of comments and lot of jokes the examiner Saturday Dec 31 197713 Declining birth rate worries Russians MOSCOW Reuter Wor ried by declining birth rate among Russians and other na tional groups some Soviet soci ologists are daring to ask if the emancipation of women might have gone too far In country which takes the working woman for granted the idea that her place should be first and foremost in the home marks radical departure from accepted thinking Yet this is the argument ad vanced by sociology professor who had completed four years of research into social trends among different Soviet nation alities Traditionally Soviet woman is depicted fighting at the labor front alongside the men In the famous statue at Moscows ex hibition of economic achieve ments it is peasant woman who holds the sickle aloft while male worker raises the ham mer The image is fair reflection of Soviet reality The statue it self was sculpted by woman And her sisterworkers today account for more than 51 per cent of the labor force FEWER IN POLITICS They may be overshadowed by men in politics But women easily outnumber male doctors and teachers No one bats an eyelid on encountering woman engineer construction worker or street cleaner The convention assumption is raises questions about em that they cope with the task of raising family by leaving young children at daycare centre or with the childs grandmother The picture that emerges from the research is rather dif ferent The more women went out to work it was established the lower the birth rate Findings were analysed in the journal Druzhba Narodov Friendship of the Peoples by Prof Yuri Arutyunyan lead ing authority in the field of ethnosociology Today fewer and fewer chil dren are being born he wrote And cannot but share the alarm of the demographers Is not too dear price being paid ftr female emancipation at all costs Couple celebrates 58th anniversary Combining job with raising family is the ideal option he said Selffulfillment was hardly possible for women without it MOTHER IRREPLACEABLE All the same if the choice has to be made between home and work would vote for the woman as mother In this role she is irrepla ceable and creates something of absolute social value by bearing and raising future citizens of the USSR Arutyunyan supported his claims with statistics showing that the birthrate was lowest in Estonia Baltic which has the highest proportion of working women in the Soviet Union republic ancipation At the other end of the scale in the central Asian republics women were still far less will ing to take on job And it was in these areas that families were largest averaging about six members The declining Soviet birth rate has been source of offi cial concern for some years Although trend towards onechild families has been the target of repeated official criti cism Arutyunyan was believed to be the first to suggest openly that overemancipation could be to blame But if Arutyunyan indicated that the answer might be for more women to stay at home he was silent about the next ob vious questionwho will step in todo their jobs compliment them Ior example Ill say cared much for it Oaks Nice words upset her Dear Ann Landers have an unusual problem and dont know single person can talk to about it Icant accept When anyone says something hair looks or my complexion or if they admire the dress am wearing get flustered and dont know what to say usually end up muttering something dumb disageeing with Oh this dress is old never People are supposed to like compliments but they get me nervous Ilow can overcome this TongueTied In Twin Dear Oaks tntie your tongue and practise saying Thank you This is the only response required when someone gives you compliment Dear Ann Landers My husband is significantly older than but we get along fine In the years weve been married he has worked many long hours children by previous marriage When his children come here me to help him entertain them They should be free to spend my time elsewhere Right Would be wrong to refuse to pick up the children for him do not enjoy seeing his exwife when pick up the kids feel this is an unnecessary burden on me Also what should say when the kids ask why dont spend more time visiting with their mother In the past Ive been pleasant toward her but Im beginning to think should avoid the situation because its getting to be strain to pay for the support of his to me about how nice my to visit is it necessary for come to see him and Soon the oldest child will be given the choice by law to live with his father My husband feels obligated to let him be cause the boy is unhappy with his mother Do have the right to say no to this Im not crazy about the idea am willing to sacrifice my time and money for his kids but not my life Provincial Police in Barrie For him the week spent with the provincial force as Georgian ollege law and security student was simply an affirmation of what he already knew that he wanted to be top had joined the auxiliary force because wanted to make sure that being policeman was what wanted to do for the rest of my life he said in an interview Being out on patrol in the cruisers for the last week has added insight into the picture had of police through the eyes ofanauxiliary officer McCurley has been an aux iliary officer since Grade III and had an advantage over classmates in having practical experience with patrols and the operations of force lot of students arent sure when they start exactly whats entailed in law and security work he said Our course is mixture of everything from the Criminal Code to forensic science practices Being on patrol with police for week has put what Mc Qirley learned in classroom MEXICO CITY tlteutcr Boys of nine and lo stagger from supemarkct checkout March when we have another week of practical ex perience he said The pro arc the lucky ones since the shoppers are generous The boys at the traffic lights may work It or 12 hours day and face beating at home when they bring home less than their father thinks they should No one knows how many chil dren are on the loose in this city of 13 million inhabitants but recent trade union cstimatc put the total at about 200000 And for every one trying to scrape living legally there is another who has turned to crime or drugs In central city squares gangs of children can be seen sniffing glue or paintAthinner recent report said that as many 7000 children aged un for It may have suffered ir reparable brain damage from this practice In the fashionable Plaza Garibaldi tourist dining in an opcnair restaurant saw the steak disappear from his plate as child ran by Ilc gave chase and the child disappeared into the public la vatory When the tourist fol lowed he was attacked by gang of children beaten and robbed of his valuables The city governor Carlos assured McCurley he was right vincial force is more rtgimcntcd Id like to see how city department works Mcturley has no illusions about the work of police of ficer after time spent as an aux iliary force member and as student Some of the comments Ive had this week havent really surprised me he said NOT ALL NICE Not all of them are nice but everyone has different at titude toward the police depen ding on their relations with them hcsaid Insults are something Mc Curley doesnt think police ever really learn to handle Its simply matter of knowing you have to conduct yourself in certain way Learning to do that comes mainly from watching regulars on the force and seeing how they handle themselves Responsible conduct is something police officers must slnw in or out of uniform says McCurley Even if youre not in uniform people who recognize you are watching you to see how you act he said You may take off your uniform but you never stop being policeman Army of children roam streets seeking something to live on Hank Gonzalez has promised an energetic program to com bat the exploitation of children and curb the electronics wizard Jeremy Lord says he has in vented system whereby the plants can talk back The equipment is expensive and the science behind it ques tionable at best but the effect is dramatic mildimannered nihber plant with nothing to say for itself one minute is suddenly bleeping away in wild array of notes and causing colored lights to blink on and off At recent lecture Lord dc signer of new electronic mu sic synthesizer explained how his bioactivity translators work To leaf of the plant he at taches two electrodes one on top and the other on the bottom Ihese electrodes made of car ixminipregnattxl foam con duct electricity but do not harm the plant and measure the electric potential across the leaf The changes in what Lord calls the plants bioclectric po tential come through the ampliv ficr as musical notes WYIANISIS SKEPTICAL Several botanists said that since the electric potential across plant cells is so tiny it is doubtful whether it could be measured in this way Lord is offering for sale three models of bioactivity trans lators The cheapest which can be run by batteries for outdoor use has only one sound channel and costs close to $100 The top ofthe line translator carries $290 price tag two speakers and six lights It can be hooked up to the recordplayer in case one wants music not plantsto make the lights flash Lord who has sold 10 devices rmdily admits that the con ventional body of plant scien tists take all these ideas rather lightheartedly and that he has no idea what the sounds say about the plant making them No doubt one could learn to distinguish between sick and healthy plant What is so extraordinary is the sudden increase in activity or response when person env ters the environment of plant he says noting that the activity is about five times greater when person is nearby than when the plant is alone DESCRIBES INCIDENT Lords strangest anecdote about plant communication in volvcs an incident which oc curred when he had his ma chines and two plants on show at convention With many people about the two plants were blecping rap idly away when an onlooker proclaims the man taken to hospital ski mask about them they do surprise someone Why police asked What would happen it cut all their leaves off Both plants immediately went deathly silent for some seconds It could not have been coincidence Lord maintains because the two shut up at the same time By illlthIDJONES In the play Hamlet Shakespear wrote The apparel oft Four hundred years later he would still be right Its easy to spot swinger or staid banker mile away But what would the immortal bard say about man out for mornings stroll without stitch of clothing couldnt find an answer in any of his plays Recently there was an amusing picture in the newspaper It showed nude man walking across Fifth Avenue in New York City He was strolling along nonchalantly with the rest of the crowd And nobody noticed him He was picked up and What would make man do this on cold wintry morning Was he merely nature buff out for brisk walk Or did this man need psychiatrist Or perpahs better tailor Most people who expose themselves are more subtle Ihc streaker quickly comes and goes Most exhibitionists expose sexual organ in less crowded spot Yet one recent Canadian went bit further He would p0 between cars in the basement of ighrise apartmcnl also had stingy tailor His entire outfit consisted of Theres good chance that the New Yorker photographtxl was an exhibitionist Its one of the most common sexual of fences and sooner or later most of us encounter one couldnt locate the Canadian figures But last year in England and Wales there were three thousand convictions for indecent exposure Just in case one appears in your neighborhood there are certain things you should know lntend to shock The prime purpose of an exhibitionist is to shock you And most of these people will continue to expose themselves until The unfortunate New Yorker didnt seem to be having much luck But he picked tough city However even in smaller Canadian and 18 towns exhibitionists often have rough time getting attention Because most people tend to ignore these encounters and look the other way suppose most of us think If this is the way the poor devil gets his kicks why report him to the welcome to the club ward to suddenly chop it off end What you should know jk about an exhibitionist In one sense this is logical because most of these in dividuals are harmless Yet being confronted by an exhibitionist at midnight in parking garage can be dangerous and unnerving Theres another interesting aspect to this problem Some of these people have need to be arrested Theyll even go out of their way to ensure it For example some will hang around until theyre picked up by the authorities Others will use car which can be traced What motivates people to expose themselves Most exhibitionists have an inferirority complex They lack self estccm and have major doubts about their own sexuality lirequently they have an unsatisfactory sexual relationship with part ner In effect they suffer from castration anxiety Suddenly exposing the sexual organ and seeing people shocked reassures them of their own sexuality This act reinforces their psyche that theyre strong potent and frightening What you should do It you encounter an exhibitionist should you turn the other way call the police or recommend better tailor The best move is to report the incident The persononthe street cannot separate the harmless from those destined to rape and other criminal acts Besides early treatment may cure the problem Psychiatrists try to improve their sense of importance Since exhibitionists have tendency to be impotent enhan cing their sexual function is part of the therapy Those who want to help and who have reasonable marriage relation ship are often cured The poorly motivated ones will turn up again in the parking lot new approach shame therapy has been tried in the US The patient exposes himself to willing females Its their job to ignore and embarrass him Making it shameful experience rather than rewarding one has helped some patients Since there are ethical considerations to this treat ment it hasnt been tried in Canada What about women There are female exhibitionists But its one area where women get better deal than men as you rarely hear of them being arrested An old joke tells why this is the case If man walks by window and sees woman undressing he apprehended as peeping Tom But if woman passes by wmdow and sees man undressing hes arrested for in decent exposure can give would be most helpful ImGoing Out To Lunch Dear Lunch The principal failure for most second mar riages is problems created by the exwife and children So If you want yorr marriage to succeed youd better make up your mind that youre going to do lot more com promising and puttingupwith than you had planned dont feel you should have to keep company with your Regarding the boy coming to one If you say no you will surely you and your husband and that could be the beginning of the husbands ex if it bothers you but once havmg established the pattern of friendly relationship its going to be awk live with you this is tough build barrier between Dear Ann Landers know you said No more but cant resist an attempt to have the last word The last gasp of
