nervous wreck My mother makes me take my fouryearold sister wherever go on Saturdays and Sundays Shelly is spoiled rotten If she doesnt get her way she screams My mother gives in to her because she has high blood pressure and cant stand the noise What should do Like Stuck Dear LS The noise Shelly is making now will be like whispers compared with what will come later unless your mother gains control of the situation Furthermore she is not being fair to you suggest counselling for your mother at once Show her this column Fgr What lts worth Somehow always illprepa red By MARGARET WORTH Mother dear said very organized daughter last week why dont you think ahead She was quite right of course have known for weeks that Christmas is coming Its as inevitable as snow and head colds and somehow am always rather illprepared for all three Every January make wonderful resolutions vow that will turn into one of those super efficient people who gather their presents through the year and can usually tell you in April what Aunt Hilda is getting for Christmas Somehow though my good intentions just dont materialize Like the ostrich obstinately keep my head tucked in the warm sands of summer and hope that December will never come So here we are with less than week to go and havent even mailed my cards yet Fortunately my mother understands me She says that she always enjoys receiving her Christmas gift from Canada it brightens up the end of January for her Really do have very good system for buying presents have what my husband calls the blitz approach select one evening arm myself with long list and stoically march forth know exactly what am going to buy that is until walk into store then the trouble begins Somehow everything changes Once through those glittering glass doors into the seduc tive lure of bright lights and Christmas misic garlands and Sparkling tinsel beckoning and promising thousand delights my judgment suffers very severely remember one Christmas when almost managed to con vince myself that my nonsmoking husband wanted nothing so much as table lighter disguised as motorcar under the tree Fortunately the saleslady was very kind and understanding about exchanging it always end up footsore tired buy somehow triumphant weighted down with enormous piles of presents that usually bear very little resemblance to my original list and the con viction that will never get everything done in time It will all get finished eventually probably not until late Christmas Eve but the goose will be tucked away into the warm depths of the oven the presents will be wrapped and ut under the Christmas tree and stockings will be filled to ursting Somewhere along the way the Grinch in me gets lost and find my own brand of Christmas irit the kind that lets me enjoy grumbling little along wit thousand other mums who like me will breathe secret sigh of relief when the final piece of wrapping paper disappears into the garbage and the last small right face is stil ed in sleep Pollxs Einters Felt bottom saves tablei DEAR POLLY was given heavy souvenir ashtray that has made scratches on one of my end tables that has shiny finished wood top once read 2i remedy for this but it has slipped my mind so hope you can tell me what it is MARY DEAR MARY The best thing know is to cup piece of felt to fit over the bottom and then glue it to the bottom of thc ashtray POLLY DEAR POLLY If you are one of those people who does not know where to put bedspread at night fold it in four sections widthwise and then in half lengthwise Open the top drawer of chest insert about six inches of the end of the folded spread or enough to keep it off the floor and then close the drawer It is out of the way and there are no wrinkles in the morning MSW DEAR POLLY put dish towels under the containers of milk orange juice etc in my refrigerator to catch any drips from thcsc containers Also the towels retain any odors from the refrigerator and being able to take them out and washing them helps to keep my refrigerator looking good as well as smelling good ANN DEAR POLLY My daughter is one of those many children who do not like to eat breakfast As result used to always be nagging her to finish eating or she would miss the school bus Now have come across an idea that works wonderfully well have made up breakfast menu just as one gets in restaurant that includes some easy to prepare items such as scrambled eggs or cereal with choice of juice so every morning she is delighted to pick her own breakfast They are numbered as in restaurant so she can order by number too Our early mornings are certainly much more pleasant FVK DEAR POLLY save all the ends of bars of soap drop them in plastic bag and put it in the glove compartment of my car When traveling take out an end of soap and take it to the restroom which more times than not has no soap and when firiishcdwithjtleayc it for the next person Next timc you have some lcftovcr sauerkraut try putting it in roll with hot dog and have delicious quick lunch or supper RIIETTA
