12 the examiner Friday Nov 18 1977 Almost scored touchdown By ED HARPER Chay The season is over for the Toronto Argonauts and it is not surprising since in most of their games during the season it appeared as if they were doing everything possible to lose They would fumble the ball miss punts and con sistently miss their tackles etc In other words they played terrible football There is only one thing that the Argos didnt do and that is score touchdown for the op osing team the way Roy Riegels of the University of Ca ifomia did in the 1929 Rose Bowl game Many football fans still believe that Roy Riegels ran the wrong way and scored touchdown for Georgia Tech in that Georgia Tech an 87 victory over California The fact and legend connected with the play have become slowed down to stop motion can determine exactly what happened Both California and Georgia Tech were undefeated when collegiate team in the country The teams were scoreless in the first quarter Midway through the second quarter Georgia Tech had the ball on its own 26 yard line after thwarting California touchdown bid On first down Stumpy Thomason one of Techs great ball carriers crashed into the California line broke into the secondary and through to daylight At his own 36 yard line he was hit and fumbled the ball As the ball was bouncing around at the Tech 40 yard line Riegels Californias centre and captainelect for the next seasonpicked it out of the air What happened next is what was cleared up for all time by slow frame by frame analysis of the action The film shows that Riegels began running the ri ht way He had been trailing the ball carrier and when the hall was fumbled he picked it up on the bounce and started down field in the right direction reason made half circle turn and started for his own goal line The Georgia Tech players gave halfhearted chase but were content to let Riegels runiunimpeded However Benny Lom Californias great running back started after Riegels Lom caught him at the 10 yardline and slowed him down with bear hug Their momentum took the two California players to the two yard line where Lom broke away from Riegels perhaps trying to lead him back up field The New York Times reported the incident in the following way Benny Lom halfback for the Golden Bears sensed the situation almost immediately and sprang into ac tion Down the field he went after the flying Riegels who only put on more speed as he heard the pounding of feet on the turf behind him Finally Lom grabbed hold of his mate at the California three yard line and turned him around Making interference for Riegels Lom started back down the field but Tech was alert and wave of tacklers hit Riegels before he could more than turn around hurtling hime back nto the one yard line Riegels sat on the ground in shock as his sympathetic teammates came over to console hime Riegels had made terrible mistake but in actuality the score was still 00 and California was in possession of the ball with first down on their one yard line The way football was played in 1929 became the important factor in Californias ultimate loss This was the era before platooning and the eleven men who had just defended against Georgia Tech were now on offense The California players were still in shock over Riegels wrong way run and it was decided to get rid of the football as quickly as possible Benny Lom went deep into the end zone to punt on first down Roy Riegels took his position at centre California immediately took up the punt formation but Riegels at centre was nervous and Lom receiving the ball to kick wasnt too steady either As the ball was snapped 1aree the Georgia Tech tackle stormed through and blocked the punt The ball rolled out of the end zone but the officials ruled that Brechenridge the California quar terback had touched it and that safety would be scored against California The final score in the game was 87 for Georgia Tech Well at least the Argos tried to run the right way while losing their games this season Ampleford lead senior scoring Barrie Flyers have only one player in the top 20 scoring race in the Ontario Senior Hockey League In the league statistics released Thursday Wayne King we will be ready for them Forbes said Oak Ridges may have only scoreless tie in the first period with both teams having great scoring opportunities Toffan was spectacular in kicking out Illshots The Colts came out in the se cond tried determined team The Chlts started bodycheck ing more and the aggressive play paid off at 110 when Garner led charge up ice Garner Giffen and MacDonald all crossed the Kings blueline at the same time and Garner fired quick wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle The low shot caught the Owen Sound goalie by surprise and went in the far corner The Colts rushed right back up ice following the faceoff and hemmed the Kings in their own end After several shots on net Don Martin tipped in rebound with three Barrie players crowding the front of the net Assists went to Ross Walton and Scott Robertson The Colts then had trouble pressing home their advantage The Kings came back and Tof fan again kept Barrie in the game with his acrobatics The Kings
