mr Volcano the examiner Wednesday Nov 16 1977 MANILA Renter Vol canoesare rumbling again in the Philippines and geologists are keeping careful watch for possible eruptions Dozens of craters dot the Islands and one of them Taal is the latest to show signs of ac tivity Taal which lies in the middle of picturesque lake only 96 kilometres 60 miles south of Mamla may erupt at any time and the Volcanology Commis sion has urged residents in the area to evacuate their homes Early in October the volcano started spouting ashladen clouds with continuous ejec tion of steam Taal last erupted in 1970 with out casualties but in 1965 after being dormant for 54 years it spewed out tons of mud and ash killing about 150 people Taals most devastating eruption was in 1911 when it de stroyed about 5000 square kilo metres 2000 square miles of rich coconut plantations and killed 1300 people many drowned in the lake in their panic flight VILLAGES BlRIEI The most active of the coun trys nine major volcanoes is Mount Mayon at the southern tip of Luzon island in the cen tral Philippines It last erupted violently in 1968 and its worst recorded eruption was in 1814 when it buried several villages and killed more than 1000 people The Volcanology Com mission which conducts studies of all volcanoes to predict eruptions has established an observatory in the vicinity of Mount Mayon and near three other vol canoesTaaL Hibok Hibok and Canlaon Hibok Hibok on the southern island of Camiguin last erup ted in 1953 killing about 500 people and burying crops and property under tons of lava Canlaon in the heart of sugarrich Negros Island in the central Philippines last erup ted In 1969 without casualties But its continuous ejection of ash and steam is constant threat to several towns in the area The Philippines is entirely volcanic and some geologists believe the islands surfaced from the ocean because of sub marine volcanic eruptions thou sands of years ago SPANS ONTINENTS This theory is supported by the fact that the islands are sit uated on the Socalled Circum Pacific Bell of Fire This stretches from the west coast of South America through Central America Mexico the United States Canada and Alaska down to the Aleutians to Asia through Japan the Philip pines then on to the Moluccas and New Zealand Volcanic activity often en riches the soil of the surround ing area and provides natural steam for electricity The Philippines is beginning to tap geothermal sources of power in Leyte central Philip pines and near Manila Volcanoes even provide the Philippines with more land In 1952 the tiny island of Di dicas 120 metres in diameter was born from the ocean floor Plants therapeufic to disabled HAMILTON tCP Plants are therapeutic to everyone and theyre even more therapeutic to
