immediately That was the intent of motion passed by Tosorontio township council Monday The meeting was over the deer hunt being held at Canadian Forces Base Borden The threeday hunt is scheduled to end today It is CFB Bor den Rod and Gun Club and was approved by the ministry of natural resources to cut down the eer population which the ministry says is too high Alex Smith fish and wildlife supervisor for the minist Says he attended the meeting and advised council that it cou make application for hunt and that there Were certain policres and procedures that would have to be followed Council went on record as being opposed to the hunt At this stage the hunt would have to be revoked at the Queens Park level through an order in council because it is provincral legislation granted under provincial statutes Smith said He said the ministry has been trying to have hunt in the county for some time but the townships are unwilling to allow nuni in rneir area They keep turning us down We get barraged with phone calls from hunters who know there are lot of deer out there We get complaints from farmers who are being bothered with deer eating their crops he said LARGE DELEGATION Gordon McCraken clerktreasurer of Tosorontio Township says there was large delegation at the meeting dont think it did much good its unfortunate it happened this way The base officer who was here invited 15 men to go in and hunt today Tuesday if they wanted He said the hunt could accommodate 15 more hunters each day dont know if any went or not He says the problem arose becuase the ministry just went ahead with the hunt and didnt notify the municipalities Smith said charges of deer being penned in and trapped by fence which almost entirely surrounds the base are not true CAN JUMP FENCE He said the fence around the base is six or seven feet high and that the deer can easily jump it When they are smaller they can go through it or under it They reach stage for short time when they can do neither but the mother stays with them then proposal to county council by the ministry would allow deer hunting in the county on controlled continuous basis as required to keep the deer population at safe level Smith said It would be sort of like lottery on firstcomefirstserve basis with six control centres which would allow hunters to hunt certain areas as the need arose he said He said the proposal got to first base but has not received approval from council yet Mrs Irene China one of the protesters who demonstrated against the hunt Monday says she feels what has happened so far has been worth it We arent wrong and dont think the camp is wrong Major Mooney said he wanted to help us and believe he did Were as good as the people on base We arent planning to go into Borden and interfere with their lives but we want to be treated equal Mrs China said ministry representative told the rotesters their quotes to the media and the signs they had ma up were disgusting She said the protesters had been blamed for calls to CKBB radio show terming the hunt slaughter We didnt make any of those calls she said LEARNING EXPERIENCE Two representatives of CFB Borden at the meeting said they felt the group was not holding the base responsible for what had happened Major Ross Mooney operations and training officer termed the meeting learning experience There was no animosity towards the base displayed at all Some minor points were brought out and we will adjust these he said The discussion which took place opened communication which was requrred We had good communication with the township before and now it is better than it has ever been Mooney said he invited 15 hunters to take part in the hunt but his offer was declined They want to hunt in their own side of the township and going into Borden didnt serve their purpose in making their porn Mooney says he also offered to take those persons off the hunt who had already got their deer and replace them with hunters from Tosorontio Lt Col Dunbar technical services officer said the people from the base who organized the hunt recognized from the beginning that in order to be fair others from local gun clubs would have to be invited It was never closed hunt for the base he said Its question of how many do you ask to make everyone happy SET LIMIT With limit set on the number of deer to be shot limit must also be set on the number of hunters involved when the area is confined such as Borden is for safetys sake he said Dunbar who also spoke to protesters at the Lisle barrier out side the base early Monda said he didnt feel the people who were at the meeting were jecting to the base hunt They wanted hunt in their area and were using the base as vehic to raise publicity to get their point across he said The number of deer taken in Mondays hunt reached 21 Now is the time to get your youngsters ready for the colder weather ahead and save money too Shown orejust few in our collecrion of skijackers porkos
