their favorite musical group painted faces and all Unlikely quartet HOLLYWOOD Fleetwood Macs Rumours sells three millIon copies in 18 weeks and gets three Platinum Record Peter Framptons new disc Im In You enters the charts at No already certified platinum Barry Manilow has five albums on the charts Led Zeppelin sells out an entire tour in four hours and plays an unprecendented six soldout nights at the Forum in Elton John has sold out Dodger Stadium twice in row Youd think one of these groups or performers could legitimately claim to be the most popular on the entertain ment scene After all dont soldout concerts and record sales determine whos the hottest of the hot The way you decide is to ask 1069 teenagch to name their favorite mmical group or personality Thats what pollster George Gallup did and he came up Kiss the musically mediocre quartet that dresses up its act with painted faces and fire the runaway first choice of both girls and boys as their favorite musical group Theyre unique group board carriers rockets and things like that The book nook The story saw on the results of the Gallup one of two recent rock studies by political observers did not explain in detail whom the questionch talk one police told Gallups clip They do what they feel on the stage and show you good time They paint their bodies and shoot off youth survey ed to But the Kiss finishes first in Gallup By ROBERT LAURENCE results made one wonder about all those political polls Copley News Service Gallup and his minions are forever conducting True Kiss does have four albums listed on Billboards Top 200 charts right now but the highest is No85 and while Kiss does well in concerts it poses no threat to Led Zeppelin and Elton John So So rock fans apparently tell pollsters something different from what they tell ticket sellers and record sho clerks and conventional methods of polling get questionab results when they venture outside traditiona For the record here are Gallups Terrific 20 in order Kiss The Eagles The Beatles Led Zeppelin Boston Chicago Aerosmith Peter Frampton Earth Wind and Fire 10 and the Sunshine Band 11 Barry Manilow 12 Elton John 13 Beach Boys 14 Stevie 15 Barbara Streisand 16 The Jacksons 17 The Bee Gees 18 The Rolling Stones Wonder Denver Assuming Gallups list does bear some resemblance to fans real preferences it does indicate the breadth of to days pop music scene It confirms of the Beatles seven years after the group stopped producing records and indicates that the public taste encompasses an incredibly diverse range Ranging from the bizaarc antics of Kiss to the jazz oricntcd sounds of Chicago to the discoltfunk of and the Sunshine Band to the middleoftheroad pop of Barbara Streisand Still one has to be suspicious of poll that declar more popular than Stevie Wonder and the Sunshine Band Wings and John Denver territories 19 Wings 20 John the continued popularity JFK tried to destroy PC government Diet claims in The Tumultuous Yeors By HAROLD MORRISON The Canadian Press John Diefenbakcr claims that the late president John Ken nedy conspired to destroy his Progressive Conservative gov ernment in 1963 and that treachery in his own cabinet fi nally drove him from the party leadership In The Tumultuous Years 196267 the former prime minister who in 1958 amassed one of the greatest political vic tories in Canadian history as sesses the causes of his down fall in wholly subjective way assuring that his views will be disputed by those who worked with him and those who ob served his operations Many of those who have read his latest volume of memoirs have already challenged his ac cusations suggesting among other things that he was essen tially suspicious person po litical Lone Ranger who saw plot against him under every cabinet desk Before John Kennedy arrived at the White House Diefcnba ker showed great admiration for his predecessor the late president Dwight Eisenhower Republican Diefenbaker didnt seem to mind offering his advice But Kennedy beat Richard Nixon and it seemed inevitable to both Washington and Ottawa observers that Kennedy and Dicfenbaker would not get along Friction between the two worsened steadily centring on the crucial issue of joint de fence and Canadian cooper ation in meeting what was then considered the main threat the possibility of Soviet aggression Diefenbaker showed reluc tance to arm Canadian Bomarc missiles with nuclear warheads supplied and controlled by the United States Whether the Be marc was really effective was another question But the United States considered that Canada had agreed to accept the nuclear warheads to help protect key industrial areas on both sides of the border Diefcnbaker openly ma noeuvred to keep the warheads out of Canada For months Washington kept silent and then in January 1963 just before Diefcnbaker was forced into an unwanted election state department news statement openly disputed the Canadian prime ministers ver sion of defence arrangements That Diefenbaker has tauen subjective view of the events appears amply illustrated by his charges spread throughout the book that he was the victim of conspiracies plots cliques lszofn
