officers Orillia man on trial facing assaqu charges 47yearold Orillia man charged with two counts of assaulting police went on trial before jury in county court Thursday in Barrie Carl Edward Bursev was charged after apparently being involved in scuffles with members of the Onllia detach ment of the Ontario Provincial Police on Feb 1976 Constable Paul Purdy testified Bursey kicked him in the chest and later punched him in the face when he tried to make an arrest on charge of impaired driving He said he found Bursey parked on median on Highway 11 near Highway 128 at about 1148 am with his commonlaw wife and her son He testified he decided to arlt rest Bursey after noting his slurred speech and smell of alcohol and said he asked Bursey to step out of the van He turned in the drivers seat and kicked out with both feet into my chest said Con stable Purdy who was flung back onto the ground FOUR OPP ARRIVE At least four OPP officers ar rived moments later in response to call for police assistance made by Constable Purdy and Bursey was put in the back of cruiser he said second scuffle broke out in the cruiser Burseys common law wife refused to get out after talking to her husband for few minutes said Constable Purdy When asked her to get out she said she was quite finished talking to her husband but said she wouldnt get out he testified After warning her she would be forcibly removed from the cruiser Constable Purdy testified he leaned over and took her arm just as Bursey punched him in the face with his fist Constable Purdy said he walked away from the cruiser after the punch to let other of ficers calm the two down say ing he wanted to cool down his anger When he returned Mrs Bursey was in separate cruiser and Bursey was hand cuffed with his hands in front in his cruiser THIRI INCIDENT Constable Purdy said he was driving Bursey accompanied by Constable Robert Charlwood in the back seat to the police station when third incident occurred looked in the rear view mirror and saw Bursey raise his two arms locked in cuffs and swing them into Constable Charlwoods face he testified He said he pulled the cruiser over to help restrain Bursey who was on his knees in the cruiser flailing at Constable Charlwood Constable Charlwood later testified he subdued Bursey by leaning on him across the seat until they reached the police station He said Bursey was ex tremely violent during the at tack and had earlier threaten ed both officers saying he had friends who would get them for arresting Bursey Once Bursey reached the police station he refused to take breathalyser test and was vocally abusive before be ing locked up in cell said both officers Under crossexamination by defense counsel Susan Brenner both officers said they had never met or heard of Bursey before Feb 1976 and had no knowledge of previous contacts he might have had with police NOT HANIKUFFEI Both said police failure to handcuff Bursey after his first alleged attack on Constable Purdy was not unusual Its procedure which isnt always done said Constable Purdy Both said Bursey complained police abused him during the incidents when he arrived at the station and said he asked at he said Companies which have defer red profit sharing plam have Productivity increased Duncan MacGregor presi dent of Peter MacGregor Ltd thinks profit sharing works In speech to the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce seminar on profit sharing this week MacGregor said his com pany which supplies procut frozen meat to restaurants started deferred profit shar ing plan in 1974 He said the company expected to make about $100000 that year At the end of the year the company made more than $200000 and the employees split $20000 he said In the second year after profit sharing was introduced MacGregor said the company doubled the capacity of its Toronto plant in major ex pansion and the employees split$37000 As profit grew so did worker productivity he said As we showed them we were doubling our profit MacGregor said it became greater incentive for them to do better MacGregor employees share $1 of every $5 of the company profits and their annual share is reinvested in the company he said Employees get monthly computer statement of their earnings which sometimes is larger than their bank balance MacGregor said Besides higher productivity MacGregor said profit sharing is an effective way of keeping union out of nonunion shop Because workers share in the fruits of their labors he said employers dont have to keep looking over your shoulder he said We have night shift at of service HARD TO MEASURE The effect of profit sharing emplo ee productivity is hard thing to measure Brown said But he cited an American study of retail store chain the examiner Friday Oct 28 1977 which showed much higher return in the first year after profit sharing scheme was in troduced over the previous year In Canada he said about 100 of the 190 companies registered with the Institute of Profit Sharing have profit sharing plans covering about 200000 employees from coast to coast There are about 300000 profit sharing plans in operation in the United States covering about 25 per cent of
