Margaret Stoltz 4357676 By MARGARET STOLTZ The Alliston Public Library is bulging at the seams and board members are at loss to know what can be done done to provxde more space not only for books but to enable the Library to reach out to even greater service to citizens of Alliston and the six surrounding townships We have no solutions only problems concluded Ken Gradwell chairman of the board who conducted the symo posium at the recent Womens Institute meeting Librarian Jean Owens brought members uptodate on services available now in what she referred to as an age mass leisure and suggested that with more time at our disposal it depends on the in dividual as to how itwili be best used Things are changing fast and this also applies to libraries she said Alliston is meeting the challenge and can fill most of the standards recently set up Muftilanguage books are available with block of 50 in Dutch German Hungarian and French also in large print books The outreach program is an asset and includes film library through the National Film Board as well as mm en tertainment films Alliston Library is one of 67 members of the Georgian Bay Regional Library and makes use of the books on loan program from the Simcoe County Library Mrs Owens recalls that in 1968 when she was appointed Librarian there were 50 books on loan and this has grown to between 1100 and 1200 The reference section is also growing as is the periodical file and there is greater demand for paper backs Besides the childrens section young adult section has been set up and much appreciated by readers are the memorial books donated by the Womens In stitute in memory of deceased members Some wild life prints are available as is the use of photo copier for nominal fee Readers still appreciate the older books and these are kept as long as space is available Through grant from the ministry of culture and recreation Louise Gallaugher compiled works as local history project which are now available We cant grow much more but we have to keep abreast and make additions Mrs Owens said in closing Peter Cameron council representative on the board ex plained how the Library Board functions under jurisdiction of the town Cal Fitzgerald repor ted the circulation to be bet ween 4300 and 5500 compared to16001800 fouryearsago Secretary Dorothy Calder told of the operational side the setting up of an annual budget with assistance through grants both provincial and municipal the latter by carefully calculated assessment based on the number of geople availing themselves to li rary facilities in Alliston and surrounding townships Referring to cost of operation with staff of nine full and parttime employees mem bership fees escalating main tenance Mrs Calder had bright note Mrs Owens is not only dedicated Librarian but dedicated shopper Where are we going is what Mr Gradwell expected the ladies would like to have an swered in summary but ad mitted the Board presently does not know and of course tie Womens Institute which own the building is most concerned that the present structure remains as memorial to the young men who lost their lives in world wars Mrs Allan Corrigan presen ted most interesting account of the beginning of the Memorial Library and how hard the early members worked to raise money with only $200 remaining of the war funds This was done by can vassing concerts picture shows bake sales even to selling hot dogs on the street The library was officially opened on Feb 1924 by the late Dr Frederick Banting and veterans were given free use the basement until Walker Hall was built in 1945 The building was leased to the Library Board in 1972 and to provide more space the Library was moved to the first floor and the WI renovated up stairs for their hall Mrs Somerville presided for the interesting meeting and business included the ap pointment delegate and an alternate to the Area Con vention at Knox Presbyterian Church Nov 14 and 15 Mrs Gray conducted the In Memoriam honoring the memor of Mrs Hancey who was evoted W1 mem er for many years and Mrs Hand gave the motto Forget what you cant do and concentrate on whatyou can Mrs Stoltz contributed vocal
