Crime Flashback srwt Dimmock murder case is still mystery The names Phyllis Dimmock Bert Shaw and Robert Wood are scarcely remembered now But back in 1907 their names and lives were so well known that acotrs on stage in Londons West End would stop performing in order to tell their audience of any new development in the Dimmock murder case Phyllis Dimmock was an attractive 23 yearold prostitute who plied her trade on the streets and in the pubs in the Kings Cross District of London England Phyllis like hundreds of other London whores never pretened to be anything other than whatshe was As luck would have it she met Bert Shaw in pub one night Bert although obviously enraptured by Phyllis abundant charms had more serious side Over the next few weeks he and Phyllis made the necessary financial arrangements whereb he partook liberally of Phyllis stock in tra While the serious Bert thought this was just great it lacked the stability and permanence he desired He approached Phyllis about drop ping her profession and becoming his mistress Phyllis took about 20 seconds to think it over before accepting So it came to pass that Phyllis Dimmock took up housekeeping at 29 St Pauls Rd Camden Town and to all outward ap Ruby Young saw the newspaper story and recognized the handwriting on the postcard By coincidence Ruby was also prostitute She had recently taken more or less steady boyfriend Robert Wood She knew that Wood had written the postcard Clean cut Robert Wood led something of double life By day he was talented pattern designer as well as an excellent artist At night Robert loved to pick up lady of the evening and jump into the sack When Ruby first spotted the postcard she remembered that Robert had talked to her about the night of Sept II and the next mor ning He had told her that if anyone asked to be sure to tell them that he had spent that particular night with her Now she knew why On the day the card was published Robert paid little visit to Ruby He told her there was logical explanation for the card he had written to be found in murdered girls bedroom He explained that one night he had met Phyllis in the Rising Sun pub He bought postcard when Phyllis showed some interest in vendor who was walking through the pub selling them Phyllis asked him to write note on the card and send it to her It was fact that Phyllis did collect postcards Robert said that he wrote was sea cook It appears that Phyllis was partial to men who practised the culinary arts while in motion whether it be over land or sea This particular sea cook proved without glimmer of doubt that he was in his own rooming house at the time of Phyllis murder He was full of other useful information On his last visit to 29 St Pauls Rd for fun and games the nigh before the murder Phyllis had shown him strange postcard It was addressed to Mrs Shaw and said Phyllis darling if it please you to meet me at the Instead of the word Rising Sun there was rather good illustration of winking sun rising over the horizon It was signed Yours to cinder Alice The police searched for the postcard without success It wasnt until Bert Shaw was moviing out of his rooms that he discovered it under some newspapers lining drawer He turned the postcard over to the police who distributed if to the newspapers The card was reproduced in the papers and the publicity soon brought results It is possible that men at the turn of the century identified with Robert for great portion of public opinion was in sympathy with him in his predicament Most believed that he was innocent The defence brought Roberts father to the stand He swore that his son was home during the early morning hours when the murder took lace One witness who claim he recognized Robert outside Ph llis door by the light of the electric street amps after five am on the fateful day was embarrassed when told that the lights had been turned off at 440 that morning The defence argued that the killer must have been covered with blood No blood was ever found on Roberts clothing In fact he showed up for work as usual only few 11 hours after the murder and acted normally in every way The jury took only 17 minutes to find Robert Wood Not Guilty The crowd in the Old Bailey cheered wildly So notoriuous was the case that Robert Wood and Ruby Young had to change their names in order to drop into obscurity Who killed Phyllis Dimmock
