suggested various pills soa deodorants antiperspirants and two baths daily No ing helps The last doctor made the most sense He said about one person in 100 has chemical condition that produces body odor that nothing can be done about wish my friends and coworkers with the delicate noses had to walk in my body for 24 hours It would be interesting to see how well they could suffer the slings and arrows of my Outrageous Fortune Dear OF too checked with three doctors about the one in 100 theory and none of them have heard about it This 15 not to say it isn correct Two of my consultants mentioned an odor phobia It seems that certain individuals who feel rejected by family or frien ds imagine they dont smell right They go from doctor to doctor about the problem No docotr can smell the odor they insist is present and offensive The next step is psychiatrist Dear Ann Landers have beautiful daughter who has great deal of talent and an outstanding personality lear ned only recently that Mother in San Jose Dear Mother There is no way you can force lesbian to get straightened out if she is happy with her lifestyle Since you are the one who is having the sleepless nights suggest counselling to help you adjust to the situation Also consider inquiring about organizations and groups for parents of gays who feel as you do Check with Community Referralin the phone book From all reports these groups have been im mensely helpful to ma ny And good luck dear Dear Ann In spite of the vigorous campaigning against cigarette smoking read where the inhabitants of the United States ties DEAR POLLY have large collection of mens ties that are out of style hate to throw them away when feel sure someone someplace has great idea as to what could be done with them Hope some of the readers have some ideas they will share GERRY DEAR GERRY We have many clever and ingenious readers who will probably be coming forth with all sorts of ideas for you In the meanwhile you could be thinking about us ing some of the ties to make an oldfashioned pieced quilt Have family and friends embroider their names on the various pieces Many of our grandmothers made these Friendship quilts If the project seems bit large one might be made in an afghan size Ties could also be made in patchwork designs for pillows or circular floor length covers to go on tables POLLY DEAR POLLY and EF My mother solved the problem for me of mattress left with an odor after bed wetting would like to share it She cut out the top of the mattress cover where the accident had happened removed the affected filling below this hole and repacked it with foam rubber One could use old rags cotton nylon hose or whatever She bought piece of ticking and patched the cut out part This solution was so simple and certainly better than having to buy new mat tress MRS BTB Jacobson Frances Elizabeth Young and Allan George David Jacobson were married in an afternoon at Central United Church recently The bride is system in Ontario unless im mediate future solutions are found to the declining enrolments This was the yim warning given to educators Friday at the Commission On Declining Enrolments CODE con ference at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education OISE The minister of education Thomas Wells told the con ference delegates that con certed efforts must be im mediately undertaken by educators and the public to find viable and practical solutions to the dangers implications of declining school enrolments This is not statistical numbers game we are playing with here its humans game It needs to be explained to people that as enrolments get smaller schools will have to close and educational programs will have to be dropped It also means at increased declining enrolments will lead to fewer teachers Wells said The commissioner of CODE Dr Robert Jackson told the audience the problems arising from declining enrolments are of major importance in magnitude for the education system Unless conditions change quickly and drastically theyre almost certainly going to be with us until the turn of the cen tury and probably well beyond HAYS TRAVEL SERVICE 7234700 45 Dunlop St lent to the Iheotve Some things dont have to cost more to be better 1969 the year 2000 Jackson said DECLINING BIRTH RATE The main demographic fac tors population statistics for the enomenon of declining enro ments in the schools are low fertility rates decreased birth rates and immigration trends The fertility rate the number of births or 1000 women has eclined dramatically over the past 15 years mainly because of chang ed social attitudes availability of effective contraceptive devices and legalization of therapeutic abortions Jackson said The fertility rates in Ontario have dropped from 15784 in 1959 to projected level in 1977 of 6810 The reproductive period for women has steadily shrunk to the stage where it extends from only 18 years to 32 years not the traditional 15 ears to 49 ears which prevai ed coup of generations ago Jackson said As well the number of births in most provinces has been steadily declining or levelling off over the past 15 years and not increasing Women are now bearing only 18 children on the average well below the 20 re lacement rate needed to keep natural population increase at rate of zero Jackson said Because of these factors elementary school enrolments in Canada reached peak of 38 million in 1968 and now ts the examiner Wodnoulay Oct 19 1977 21 heading to low of about 29 million in the early 19805 As well secondary school enrolment now at its peak of about 19 million is headed for decline of about 500000 across Canada between now and the early 19903 Unlike Dr Zoltan Zsigmond of Statistics Canada who believes there will be baby boom echo in the last half of the 1900s Dr Jackson says such babyboom echo is only llwhismrY This echo is supposed to re resent the birt of the ba ies from parents who are part of the postwar baby boom The absence of this baby boom echo is demonstrated in the birth registrations in Canada from 1974 to June 1977 Need solutions to declining enrolment Specifically the birth figures in Ontario for 1974 were 124229 in 1975 12571 and up to June 1977 63050 Many of us face the gravest concern in education of our lives Teachers and pupils are going to be hurt unless we plan carefully Because of the low fertility rate Jackson said the im mediate future for school enrolments is going to be bleak with little evidence of relief in sight for any of the school systems The fertility tumaround has already diminished the to 13 group of school children ch reached its national baby boom peak 2702500 in 1971 Football fall fairs city and country livingdo it all and stay warm lip 17 7x Viki it Kii1 Warm winter coots fight
