the second annual Sharing was Claire Cram of Maple who shares laugh with two handsome members of The Young hilds World conference sponsored by the lluronla branch of the her entourage Examiner lliotoi Conference focuses on toys By PAUL DELEAN Examiner Staff Reporter According to Websters Dic tionary the word toy can be taken to mean thing of little value and importance That definitation probably would have been contested Saturday at Georgian College where over 150 persons from throughout southern Ontario thered for fullday con erence on the theme Sharing The Young Childs World Organized by the Huronia Branch of the Association For Early Childhood Education of Ontario AECEO the con ference featured an address by Ada Schermann early childhood education colt ordinator at the University of Toronto toy and book displays and nine workshop presenta tions Workshop topics included infant stimulation its role and importance in the com munity early identification of learning disabilities music for the very young and toys bow to use what you have to extend learning Directing the latter session was Mrs Abbie Robinson Armstrong early childhood education coordinator at Seneca College in Toronto who has strong opinions on which toys are conducive to child creativity TOYS MAY LIMIT In her view the more toy does on its own the less it allows the child to express himself The doll that walks talks and eats limits itself while the plain variety keeps the wheels of creativity in mo tion Mrs RobinsonArmstrong us ed unit blocks set of large plain hardwood pieces fashion ed into various lengths and designs to illustrate her con cepts There are about 99 ways to use blocks in preschool pro gram that will promote cognitive learning as well as psychomotor learning Normally people think of blocks just as something to build With You can do lot more with them than leave them in corner and build with them In her workshop Mrs Rob insomArmstrong demonstrated some of the additional uses The blocks were used as prin ting and counting devices and for the creation of maze and balance board on the floor Children up to about age 12 will probably find interesting and inventive ways to use the plain unit blocks she said DOESNT COMPARE The typical storesold block with letters and numbers etch ed onto cube simply does not compare in her Opinion Mrs RobinsonArmstrong said that type of block usually in ust one shape and size is rat or limiting The letters and numbers that adorn the blocks are mere decorations and distractions theyre primarily for the parent not thechild When you look at the unit block from creative stand point you can observe what children are trying to do with those blocks as opposed to the others Parents whove seen them in action tend to subse quently dispose of toys that limit ieir child OST Stitl The average price for 50 to 60 piece set of unit blocks $60 may seem otiilandish to some parents but Mrs Robinson Arnistrong feels the cost is justified by the rmsibililies that it offers Her advice to all parean is to try to find those toys that are very plain but lend themselves to many aspects of activity Mrs RobinsonArmstrongs inion wasnt necessarily stared by others at the conven tion Mary Strong Roag for ex ample found no use in rating one toy against another in terms of creativity Miss Strongviioag is co ordinator of the ilumber Col lege Travelling Toy Chest diiigservice she noted travelling van which schedules regular visits to various southern Ontario communities and lends toys to children up to 12 who are developmentally handicapped in her view the sibilities of each to depen on the in dividual ciild and his or her reaction to it if its making him happy hes going to learn from it more if its good for that child then its good toy Miss StrongrBOag believes that most toys teach somewhere betwecn60 and 100 skills including the motor cognitive sensory selfhelp communication and occupa tional variety All toys can teach skills as long as one is aware of child development and the skill development uence she says whileconc ing that most parents do not have that awareness The Travelling Toy Chest is trying to improve that degree of awareness throu parent workshops allied wit the ion Ann Landersl death rate has declined Dear Readers Its time we had some good news for change and am happy to print it Figires
