10 the examiner Friday Oct 14 1077 sports hee By ED HARPER World Series is very special gt 33 Chay With the writing of this column the first World Series game between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers is over with the Yankees winning to decision in the 12th inning This is the ninth time that the Yankees and the Dodgers have met for the Worlds title No other two teams have met as often in World Series play This is only the second meeting since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles from Brooklyn The modern World Series originated in 1903 when the Pittsburgh team won the National League flag and the Boston Red Sox had been victorious in the American League The 1903 postseason contest was the result of challenges and acceptances by the individual clubs and did not have league supervision In 1904 when the Boston club re ated its triumph in the American League they challengetï¬he New York Giants to series that team having won the National League pen nant The reply by John McGraw manager of the Giants that he did not wish to endanger the standing of my team by sending it against junior league club almost precipitated new baseball war McGraw had been manager and part owner of the Baltimore aggregation in the American League of which Ban Johnson was president In midseason 1903 McGraw jumped the club to become manager of the Giants His sale of his stock was to party interested in the National League and before Johnson recovered control of the shares there was more commotion than could be started by 10 tons of dynamite McGraws belittling remark concerning the American League Boston Red Sox of 1904 caused Ban Johnson to set off some new verbal pyrotechnics The magnates of baseball sensing impending hostitlities created truce during the meetings in the winter of 190405 by agreeing to an annual postseaon series to begin in 1905 They did this more to placate Johnson than with the thought that the series would become classic gold mine of unparalled kind Post season play was not an original idea in 1903 when Boston and Pittsburg exchanged challenges and accep tances The National League had previously had rival in the American Association which originated in 1882 In 1884 the Association pennant winners challenged the National Champions and this led to annual clashes from 1884 to 1890 inclusive There was no series in 1891 as the American League disbanded that year as the season closed The first rules for World Series play were laid down in 1905 by the National Commission Those laws almost unchanged exist today It was decided that the series would be on bestfouroutofseven basis which rule was operative un til 1919 In1919 1920 and 1921 it was5 out of9 but changed back to out of in 1922 The World Series games have produced many great heroes during the many years they have been held but going through the record books the feat of Don Larsen stands out On October 8th 1956 he pitched perfect game the only perfect game in World Series history as he faced 27 batters and retired 27 Don pitching for the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 20 Larsen used only 97 pitches to retire the 27 batters an outstanding feat for Larsen who at that time was 27 years old Yogi Berra was the catcher for the Yankees in that game The World Series seems to bring out the best in some players there is always hero and always goat series can be won or lost by one good or bad play The 1977 World Series will be no exception When it is all over there will be hero of the series who will make the headlines and there will be player who wishes he could hide his head in the sand somewhere 67s upset Petes to gain top spot By THE CANADIAN PRESS First place in both divisions of the Ontario Hockey Associ ation Major Junior league changed Thursday with
