she entered in the junior agricultural competitions Large crowds viewed the agricultural displays in the Elmvale Arena over the weekend although steady downpour Saturday forced cancellation of other ELMVALE Their faces were red with cold their hair wet and straggly But Nancy Trace and Lauralee Guthrie both 15 clambered down from the toothy whale they had been riding for several blocks with smiles on their faces The two Elmvale District High School students were sup posed to be mermaids Saturday in the Elmvale Fall Fair parade They hadnt counted on get ting rained upon but the weatherman wouldnt co operate Instead of throwing in their fish tails however they merely replaced them with bright red safety patroller rain coats and went the length of the parade route on the mechanized whale that con stituted the float of St Johns United Church steady downpour dam pened and abbreviated the an nual Elmvale Fall Fair parade but the show went on nonetheless Marchers and exhibitors proceeded at their own discretion Several rain dampened floats never left the starting point Elmvale District High School The Jonah Inside the Whale float carrying Nancy and Lauralee did although its debut was hardly auspicious The tractor camouf la ed under the wooden whale bo ran out of gas shortly after the start An emergency supply was enlisted from nearby gas station but by the time the whale roared back to life the float had fallen well behind the rest of the parade It was last to arrive at the Elmvale Arena fair grounds IT WAS FUN We didnt have to go on it we wanted to said Nancy It was fun riding down the main street added Lauralee Mrs Ada Adams 86 had hoped to share that experience but the weather wouldnt allow it In sartorial velvet cape and crown set designed by fellow senior
