child head start by reading regularly WINDSOR Ont CP To instil love for reading and get child off on head start before he enters kindergarten Dr Wilfred Innerd associate professor in the faculty of education at University of Windsor suggests reading to the child regularly dont mean sitting the child across the room from you while you read book he said in an interview mean sitting the child on your lap and Show ing him what you are reading Point out the various things in the illustrations and make it clear so the child understands Innerd suggested books with lots of action and various characters performing various mics dont like to endorse brand names but for the action in volved would suggest Richard Scarry books He said not to be overly con cerned about sexism in books at such an early age The first thing to do is get the child interested in reading The sex mics can be straighten ed oui later TALK TO HIM AS PERSON Another aspect of preschool education is to bathe the child in Ian uage This meats talk ing to im as if he were another person who could understand every word you are saying even thou he can Innerd said speaking baby talk to child who has not yet learned to speak will only con fuse and retard his ability to speak properly He rejected the role of televi sion as an early childhood educator Television is passive thing that does childs thinking for him and does not encourage him to think for himself Get him away from the television any way you can The lack of mathematical skills among children concern ed Innerd more than the lack of readin skills Chi dren tend to learn very little about math at home and they go through school system being taught by teachers who dont like math either START AT HOME Parents can give their children head start with mathematical concepts at home through the use of coun ting toys blocks and numbered cards As soon as child is old enough let him hand the money to the clerk in variety store Innerd said Teach him to count change or count out the money for the bill As he gets better let him take the money in alone to pay for the goods Such educational activities whether they be associated with reading math or writing should be incorporated in trips outside the home Ann Lgnders Many truth spoken in jest Dear Ann Landers lot has been said in your column about whats wrong with education why Johnny cant read and why teachers dont want to teach Our local paper the Claremont Courier California car ried good letter to the editor which is worth sharingCon cerned To The Editor submit this letter because track meet no creative art festival no eye testingno readingsystem salesmen no gym floor varnishing no meeting for the group going to Spain no fire drill no pep rally no speaker from Africa no Washingtons birthday Labor Day the first day it snows or the first balmy day in spring Should such week be arranged it is possible that our students might be able to do what they are supposed to do in school Learn somethingObserver Dear Concerned Many truth is spoken in jest and about two layers beneath the humor is something worth thinking about Thanks for sending on Observers letter Dear Ann Landers hope you arent so fed up on the is sue of toilet tissue th at you wont print just one more letter The person who gave you the needle said there was no right or wrong way to set up the roll She signed herself Paper Crazy disagree with her Just put roll out the way Paper Crazy says it should go and leave normal twoyearsold child alone in the bathroom for 60 seconds and you will see that the right way is the way you and the rest of the people in Iowa do itSmart In Michigan Dear Smart Thanks for the vote of confidence As said before had no idea of so many people had such strong con victions about whether toilet paper should be dispensed so it rolls over the top and down or under and close to the wall Apparently after 22 years of writing this column Im still learning plenty about family as you might expect Instead was up to my knees in good brown Flesherton mud doing my part for the Split Rail Festival am never entirely certain how get inveigled into doing these things but there was last Saturday morning trusty assistant in tow very small American car loaded to capacity and two days of lit Rail in front of me Actually must admit at love Canadian Fairs They have rich magic that catches me up in its web and spins me along with thousand others It doesnt seem to matter exactly where the event takes place or even what cause is being upheld The basic ingredients are the same They are always there those doughty old farmers eyeing each others produce with deep suspicion sure in the ab solute knowledge that theirs is the best Conversing together slow and careful though pronouncements made after long thought Don want to give anything away There too the familiar whirr of sawmill and the rich tang of freshly cut wood myriad stalls each piled high with its own world of craft monstrosities and masterpieces umbled together in lorious profusion hedged about with ot dogs and chili cups of strong dark coffee But its the pie most of all the people damp and noisy staring wan ering pushing squalling nagging laughing people Never mind that its pouring with rain ignore the sea of brown mud the incessant whine of an engine three yards outside the open door the constant blare of music from half dozen sources The magic is there Two days of hectic bargaining old friend greeting old friend officials smiling doggedly through sea of unlikely demands Until Sunday evening approaches and suddenly the crowd is gone drifted away li grey ghosts through the rain Boxes and cases ap ear and in minutes there is no fair left Most of them will be back next year Lugging their heavy exhibits displaying with loving care the work of winter evenings another year gone Fixing new prices and selling off great bargains My tu now Load up the car wipe off the mud smile gratefuly at trusty assistant who been tower of strength and drive the long road home To dry shoes and blessed quiet and no good brown mud Water ruined inlaid table DEAR POLLY One evening just before retiring watered plant that was on table that had inlays of wood in the top The plant seemingly drank up all the water but the next morning the top of the table was covered with water and after mopping it up saw the in laid wood was bubbled up tried putting heavy books etc on it but to no avail Do you or the readers have any suggestions ELAINE DEAR ELAINE It sounds as If you really need the help of professional but if that is not possible you might try using good glue for wood on the back of the inlay and then weight it down until dry The glue would have to be pushed under the strips and it would be tedious job Try small place first and Ice what luck you have Doubtless all the adhesive was gone from the back of the wood strips so there was nothing to hold them when you tried the weights POLLY DEAR POLLY have quick and easy way to defrost my refrigerator take everything out of the freezer and put in our ice chest and then set the trays and bags of ice cubes around the things that have been put in the chest to keep them frozen Next open the freezer compartment and set small os cillating fan on table few feet away turn it on high and direct it toward the freezer art In about an hour the refrigerator is defrosted and not ing is melted or defrosted as they were in the ice chest The cleanup of the shelves below takes little time MRS GC DEAR POLLY Last year my husband
