the clue out on North unts ran Flyers take on By SCOTT HASKINS Examiner Sports Writer The Central Collegiate Senior Redskins pounded North Col legiate 360 in its home opener Tuesday but it was really nothing to get excited about The senior squad has proven over the years that it is the power of the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association Senior Football League We really didnt show thing out there today head coach Dave Garland said after the win All we showed is that we can move the ball on the ground TOOK miler Central took 130 lead at half time and then rolled up straight points in the second half of the game Central running backs Paul Laking and Tim Gleason were the story of the game as each rambled for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns Ric Cloughley scored the other ma jor late in the game Central gave some indication of what the North defence could expect for the afternoon on the first series of the game Central took the ball on their own 35 yard line and then Laking and Gleason went to work THEY CARRIED BALL They carried the ball to the North five yard line but for some reason quarterback Dave Waldock decided to go to the air and it was picked off The North offence couldnt move the ball and had to unt Dave Brittnell picked up the ball on his own 35 yar line and ran it back to the North 32 WENT TO WORK Laking and Gleason went to work again and moved the ball down to the North three yard line Laking went over for his first touchdown and Steve Wise added the extra point to make it 70 at quartertime Central came out fired up in the third quarter and Lakin again it was the running of Laking that set up the major carried the ball from his own 41 yard line to the North two and then Gleason went in for the touchdown Central came out fired up in the third quarter and Laking and Gleason added their second touchdowns of the afternoon Wise converted one major and added 26yard field goal to make the threequarter score 290 OFFENCE NONEXISTENT the North ottence was almost noneXistent in the quarter as every time it got the ball it either fumbled or was forced to punt and give Central good field position again Laking ran punt back to the North fivc yard line and on the next play went in for his second major of the game Wise added his field goal three minutes later when Norths Ron Green chose to run instead of punt on third dovm and the Central defence snowed him under for no gain Central got the ball right back again and Gleason scored his second touchdown of the dav after Waldock had executed perfect fake to Laking The defence took off after Laking an lett Gleason with clear pass to the endzone SCOREI FINAL TOICHINHVN Central scored the final major of the game with only minute remaining Brittnell returned punt to the five yard line and then Cloughley went over the touchdown Wise added the extra point and the game ended 360 North had very little to be excited about during the game but coach Peter Donaldson didnt see it that way Despite the lack of offensive punch he was pleased with quarterback Scott Mc allum clubs dominated the rest of the first half with neither team Barrie Ilyers iii the Ontario having any real Bar rie North Collegiate player head slap while returning punt Monday in junior football game at Central bming Haskins Examiner Sports Writer Slapshot rule is ridiculous The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association has been responsible for some very strange changes to our pop ular winter sport but this time it has really outdone itself with the new antislapshot rule The rule passed at the CAHAs annual meetings earlier in the year forbids players from raising their sticks above the waist on either the back swing or the follow through of slap shot It plies to all players up to peewee pl committing the dastardl My deal is wisked away to tlvi penalty box for the man atory twominute sentence up to attempt tackle in Norths Randy Morrison 42 Try ing to catch up with the play is Centrals John Chalmers 69 Central defeated North 1412 Examiner Photo not The slapshot has always been big part of Canadian hockey Where would professionals such as Bobby Hull or Richard Martin be today if they werent allowed to develop their slapshot during their minor hockey days The slapshot certainl isnt something you learn overnight and thats just what CAHA is asking people to do It takes lot of hard work and dedication to get it right All of sudden players are given the green light to use the FANTASTIC Crinos said the game in rillia Monday was fan tastic and was looking tor replay ripps said it was rough game when the Terriers and Black Hawks met with several Dallas laycrs injured Cripps sai three Dallas players suffered knee injuries and the Black Hawks would be flying in players from hitago tonight to fill in theranks Theyll be bringing in the pros from the number one club ripps stated referring to one of the parent clubs of Dallas Chicago The Toronto Maple Leafs are also part owners of the Dallas club Dt ESNT KNOW ripps lid not know who would start in goal for the Flycrs tonight He said the team was still experimenting with various lines but the Paul Regan Ihil Rranston Barrie lineup have not yet signed players cards but ripps was optimistic that they would be signed by the weekend Leading the list of unsigned players are Regan Branston King and Er nie Miller Church the fighter he once was and ob viously Earnie Shavers will try to cash in on that fact Thursday night when Ali defends his heavyweight title at Madison Square Garden But Shavers will find was the Shavers of the boxing world have discovered 19 times ale readythat Ali is not disposed to yield the title yet Shavers will find the greatest stumbling block in his path to the title is not Alis left jab his quick combinations or foot work Those weapons have faded with age and constant combat the blue line and waitingwfor the play to return to their end of the rink so they can dot irthing Whatever becomes of it feel it is stupid rule and one that will be more harm than he Im sure there will be peop pto hockey who completel disagree with my feelings But you must agree it certainly as chang ed minor hockey Facemask rule is better idea slapshot when they reach bantam age The only problem is that they wont know how and the consequences could turn out to be even worse than before Everyone will be turning to the slapshot instead of the much quicker snapshot One of the most dis usting sights in hockey is seeing player all alone in front the net wind up for the big slapshot and get checked from behind The rule is not specifically designed to st the slapshot It is supposed to keep the sticks on the ice an cut out some of the eye injuries that have become all too common in hockey It applies to all shots and even passes It is possible the rule will work but very few injuries occur because young hockey players try to slap the uck Its the high sticks in the corners that are responsib for most of them Pretty soon skates will be banned because they are dangerous Hockey players in tyke and atom have enough trouble standin up When they fall they have no control of their skates an that is when most of the injuries occur It is clear that defencemen will have to do things different ly or become extinct They are of no use to their team in the attacking zone because they havent developed wrist shot They will just have to content themselves with standing at The new rule which has made the wearing of face masks mandatory in minor hockey is much more sensible than the slapshot rule but it still isnt anything to write home about Facemasks should be mandatory up to midget hockey but after that is should be up to the players to decide if they want to wear it By that age layers know the dangers involved in hockey Fighting is ig art of midget and juvenile hockey and with face masks ere will be more players who decide to fight because there is no way they can be hurt The sticks will come up higher because it wont matter if you strike player in the head or not It could cause many games to get out of hand HER AND THERE Slessor and Periard insurance ma be bit
