County Sports Curlers start to register By BILL URRAN With October just around the corner preparations for another active season are receiving current attention at curling clubs of the area as well as hockey This not only applies to Barrie and Orillia clubs but others throughout the county At the Barrie curling club secretary Frank Hersey is ac cepting registrations for the coming seasons membership When completed this is at least expected to equal last seasons record of 932 Of the latter 437 were active curlers in the mens section 239 in the ladies division and 160 business girls Others were curling followers who maintained social memberships After preliminary arrangements for organization the first schedule in all divisions is expected to begin the week of October 24 starting with the mens on that night Murdie Campbell is the president of the mens club for the new season with Fred Schinners vicepresident and Frank Hersey secretarytreasnrcr The ladies section is headed by Isobel olpitts and business girls presideril Dorothy Mer rett All are enthusiastic about the prospects for another ex iting curling season The Barrie curling club will again be represented in the Silver Tankard and iwernorGenerals provincial competi tions Allstar rinks will be selected to represent the club oll licially although other rinks may also compete as well The highlight of last curling season for Barrie was the achievement ol the single rink seniors skipped by Bob McLaren which reached the provincial finals belore losing out to crack Kingston rink at Saruia Frank Hersey was defeat Bar rie Flyers 85 The teams were tied 22 after the first 20 minutes of play and the Flyers led 54 after the se cond period It was the first exhibition game of the season for the Flyers who were several players short of complete team Flyers assistant coach Gord Coates said most of the teams problems were caused by the defence He added two defencemen were not dressed for the game and left only four bluetiners for the game NEVER PLAYED One of them George Milner has never played defaice for us before Coates said It happened last year too Orillia beat us in the first exhibition game Coates said the forwards were not working hard enough and Orillia put out big team effort We put out 60 per cent of fort Coates said Flyers general manager Steve Cripps said the Terriers skated better than
