study shows There is definitely in creased risk to offspring of women who drink heavily during pregnancy said the study in todays New England Journal of Medicine The study said the health of the babies of moderate drink erswomen who drink more than once month but do not fit into the category of heavy drinkersand teetotallers was virtually the same The findings are based on review by Boston University doctors of the drinking habits of 633 pregnant women at Boston City Hospital Earlier studies have warned of the dangers of drinking to the unborn but this is the first report that measures the odds of damage occurring Dr Eileen ullette who di rected the study said she rec ommends that women give up drinking completely while pregnant Its unknown whether there is safe amount that can be of the 27 women who dra heavily throughout pregnancy had normal infants The study defined heavy drinkers as those who consume five or more drinks daily or an average of more than 112 oun ces of pure ers Seventeen per cent of the heavy drinkers children had serious birth defects they said compared withthree rcent of the babiesof nondri ers The babies of the heavy drinkers were also far more likely to be ittery unable to suck well had small heads and brains and poor muscle tone Overall 71 per cent of the heavy drinkers children had some kind of abnormality com pared with 36 per cent of the nondrinkers babies they said The doctors said it is not clear how alcohol damages the babies health However they found that the problems vary depending on how many more ths pregnant the mother is when she drinks During the first three months of pregnancy alcohol is most likely to be associated with ab normal physical development they said And later it can in hibit the fetus nutrition and Size estered system misunderstood By RUDLEIGH MacLEAN Examiner Staff Reporter Skeptics are perennial unbelievers especially toward innovative programs in the areas of education good example of this is the secondary schools semestered program In the case of the seinestered system however public skep ticism is often the result of uninterest misunderstanding and an unwillingness to let go of the old way of doing things in favor of innovative programs The semestered program has been in Operation in Simcoc County for almost four years There are three county secon dary schools using this system Collingwood Collegiate In stitute Eimvale High School and Stayner Collegiate In stitute fourth semestered hiin school will be opening in Barrie next September And already there have been grumblings of discontent and criticisms by Barrie parents against the new semestercd school But the Simcoc County Board of Trustees studied and in vestigated the semestered sys tem extensively before passing motion in May of this year to implement the program in the new secondary school GOOD SYSTEM Overall we think the idea of semestering is good system because it was needed in Barrie on account of students moving into Barrie from other parts of Ontario says Mrs Betty Thompson Board of Trustee member John Ramsay director of education for Simcoe County concurs with Mrs Thompsons sentiment As well Ramsay says careful study and iii vestigation preceded the boards decision to have the new Barrie high school pro grammed on the semester system Experience has shown that the three semestered county schools have been suceessful As well the inception of the semestered program for the new school was the result of over years study on the semestering system Ramsay said The idea of semestch pro gram is defincd as the aca demic structure of high School in which approximately one half of the subjects studied are completed between September and January the remaining half of the subjects are com pleted between January and June in any school year This semestered arrange ment is accom lished by the lengthening of daily school periods from 35 minutes to 70 minutes There are several definite ad vantages to the semestcred system lighter courseload at any given time for both the students and teachers an iin provement in student discipline and motivation an improve ment in teaching techniques and greater overall program flexibility of the respective schools These advantages of the semesterHi system represent flexible alternative for our students Ramsay said Mrs Thompson believes one of the better advantages of the scmestered systcin is that the 70 minute periods will enable the students to get their courses completed by the end of the first semester DISADVANIAGES There are howtwcipdisatl vantages in the semestcred system One of the frequent coin plaints expressed by teacher against this system is longer periods are rctrogrcssive to their subjects Among the sub ccts most adversely affected the semestch system are music and modern languages However William Giller principal of the scmestered Yol iingwuod Colic iatc says the semestcred pro lenis have for the most part been solved The weak point of this system has been with the music program The difficulty was with keeping the continuity of the instrumental music pro yain especial since stu dents music subject ended by January The solution we used however was this This junior grades have music subjects that are iialf credits thus to receive full credit student must take the music subject for two consecutive terms Ml Gillersays ne skeptic of the semester system is Janet Sauvc former teacher from British olumbia whose two public school children will be going to the new scmestcrcd school because of the school boundary zones The semester system is bad for number of reasons For iii stancc the students will take subject for only four months there will then be an eight month gap before they take the subject again As result the student will have forgotten BETTY THOMPSON good system most of what he learned in subject Mrs Snuvc says She also feels the To ininnlc periods are too long for the slur dents concentration span Mrs Sauvc maintains that the teachers are only able to hold students attention for 3t minutes at the most William tiillcr principal of Tollingwmds scincstertsl high school disagrees with Mrs Sauvcscriticisnis MOII AIIIS SIl lDICNI The scincstcred system motivates the students and challenges them intellectually Also the system calls fora dif fereiit teaching style by the teacher and this leads to more variety and interest both by the student and teacher lillci says The semester systems challlenge to student and teacher is emphasiml by Mac Hyde the appointed principal of the new Harrie High School The key to the semester system is that you dont go into it with traditional socratic teaching approaches It is iin portant teacher reorganize and carefully plan out his teaching techniques in this system Ilydc said Hyde also believes it is im portant for the student to discipline himself because the semester system encourages him to Work on his own Mr Hyde spent six years as principal of Barrics Eastvww Secondary School before his ap pointment to the new semes cred school In preparing for implemen ting the scincstercd system next fall Mr Hyde involved himself in extensive research on the scinestciing system lie was also tllVOthd in the plann ing of semestcrcd system at lhistlctown High School of Etobicokc As well he has visited and studied semestcred schools in Ontario and Alberta Icachcrs hired on for the new seinestercd school in Barrie will be familiar with the system For as Hyde says the key factor to consider in going semester is the attitude of the teachers who will be ini pleinent ing the system MAIN IRIORIIY Hydes main priority between now and next September will be to explain the feasibility of the semcslcring system One of my main aims now is to get in touch with parents of the children who will be atten ding the new scliool in order to inform them of the seinestered system The seniestered system is an alternative form of education student will not be forced to attend any school using this system just because he or she may live inside the boundaries of semestercd school While the schools in our county are governed on the mnchrinciple students may atten whatever school they choose if there is room in the school If there isnt room then the student must attend the school in his own area Mrs Thompson said When it comes right down to it the semestered school system depends on schools teachers and students And based on the success of the countys three existing se mestercd high schools the future looks healthy for the new semestered high school soon to be opened in Barrie New tuckin service available for lonely llIAWA CP Bored or lonely girls at Carleton Univer sity have new service avail able this year to help them ad just to listed as OR OVER on surveys and job applications grew up with the fol lowing timetable College 12 Marriage 22infinity Babies 2333 Retirement from scouting car pools plastic seat covers livein plumber 39 Reitrement from PTA ironing high school reunions and taking number to use the bathroom 51 Over the past 10 years the timetable has undergone some alterations and frankly wonder how all of it is going to work out Surveys now show the norm to be College 2234 Marriage 26 to later that evening Babies Later much later None of it necessarily in that order Theres nothing wrong with this timetable except the con cern that bodily changes are not necessarily keeping pace The way it stands now woman says goodbye to her teenage drivers one day and hello to hot flashes the next The other way aroundeven one dayscould be disastrous Another point that needs clarification Does Social Security cover the unborn child woman is carrying Can girl with varicose veins be named captain of the pompom line Does Medicare cover bleach Are we leaving enough time for senility Personally Id be worried sick to run out of iron on my wedding day My other concern is that if college marriage and family dont begin until the late 205 that doesnt leave much time at the end for retirement was wondering where that would fit in until talked to my son Weve pushed retirement up to right after high school he said Makes lot of sense Youre young enough to enjoy it You still have your parents support Youre surrounded by friends and youre in good enough health to travel Look Bunkie said stripping the bed with him in it youre 22 and youre too old to retire wish understood what Ijust said Softdrink leaves mark DEAR POLLY Slacks or pants that buy for myself are always too long When alter them always save the strips that are cut off the bottom and use them to make appliques to go on shirt for cute suit To make cute pants suits for my children put strips of contrasting color or print in the sides of the pants legs Then either make blouse or trim one with the same material have also used pretty scraps of material to add yokes and cuffs to plain shirts that were bought before this style became popular Can you tell me how to get cola stains out of double knits The Spray use before doing laundry works on every other stain have tried it on but not cola spots MRS 0W DEAR MRS OW Soft drink spots are tricky in that they may appear to be colorless at the time but later turn yellow or brown Cool water should always be sponged on them at the time of the accident If it looks stained sponge with equal parts of alcohol and water and then rinse out You might try rubbing glycerine into your stain leave on about 30 minutes rinse out with clear water and then launder using hot suds if possible Of course any stain removal treatment is subject to the effect on particular fabric and its color so always test first PILY DEAR POLLY Save three twopound size coffee cans cut the bottoms out of two cans an electric can opener will make nice smooth cut and then stack all three on on top of the other with of course the one that is intact at the bottom Tape them all together and then cover with pretty adhesive backed paper that matches your bathroom and have convenient holder that stores four rolls of toilet paper HILDEGARDE DEAR POLLY have had very good luck removing stub born stains froni clothes by using denture cleaning pill dis solved in water MAXINE DEAR POLLY spilled some pink nail polish on my polyester slacks so sprayed some hair spray on the spot rubbed gently and soon the spot was gone and the pants looked like new MARY DEAR POLLY After all the aluminum foil on roll has been used save the empty roll Into each of these goes neatly wound cord for an appliance so the cords never get tangled write on the roller what the cord is for so there is never any guesswork about what goes with what MRS MW Polly will send you one of her signed thankyou newspaper coupon clippers if she
