blind in the early morning darkness is made through bush and grass heavily laded with few of the afterreflecls of an evening rainstorm There is nothing as uncomfor table as getting soaked to the skin before the hunt has even started An old pair of hip waders can solve the problem lT II ROOTS Hip waders may not be the most comfortable walking at fire but cutting out the boot por tion and wearing them over your pants is sure fire way of keepingrlry Hunters from Barrie and area are fortunate to be within easy reach of number of prime waterfowl spots such as the Tiny and Wye marshes Both these governmentmanaged marshes are excellent ex amples of spots within an hours drive of Barrie Opening day of the 1977 waterfowl season is Saturday half hour before sunrise And its beginning to look as if there will be another bumper crop of hunters this season Last year according to harvest survey by the Canadian Wildlife Service 144000 licensed Ontario hunters retrieved over 934000 ducks and some 45000 geese Waterfowling continues to grow in popularity each season despite the added restrictions placed upon the sport The responsibility of the hunter is to be safe to keep others safe to respect the property of others and obey the laws of the land All it takes is one careless hunter to destroy the efforts of thousand safe hunters Jack Bonney knows this Hes been directly involved in educatin young people in the care and safety of firearms for some eig tyears IIIEF INSTRUCTOR Bonney is the chief instructor of the Hunter Safety Training Program run by the Barrie and District Hunters and Anglers Conservation lub The big thing is safety he says The course is basically familiariration program designed to acquaint the novice hunter with the working of firearm and laws governing same The course makes them safe with gun and safe in the en vironment where they will be using gun Bonney said Hunting whether for waterfowl deer moose or rabbit is an endangered sport Each year the antihunting sentiment grows louder and more organized No Hunting signs appear with in creasing regularity on land once open to hunters and more and more prime breeding ground is being lost to developers Educating the public on the role hunting has in the conserva tion scheme is major concern of clubs and provincial organizations such as the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Hunters through their licence and permit fees contribute more to conservation than any other single group Hunters have the task of trying to convince the public that hunting is part of scientific game management plan And its the hunter who must carry this message to the public putting the burden of responsibility on the hunter safety train ing programs Bonney who is the immediate pastpresident of the Barrie conservation club says the course has been taught since the early 1050s He wont even guess at the number of students which have taken the course over the years But the course itself is in for shakeup Within the next 12 months there is going to be great change in the course Bon ney explained There will be more given to survivial more to archery and more to game laws and sportsmanship he said 10 commandments of firearm safety anything you dont intend to shoot never leave your gun unat tended unless you unload it first avoid alcoholic beverages botli before and during shooting never cross fence or livery sport has its rules and regulations aimed at providing niaxnnuin enjoyment and safe ty Hunting is no llfltltlll The sport has its 10 commandments of firearm safety which each hunter whether novice or ex ixrienced woodsnian should review before the start of each Vilbflll These crimmandments are treat every gun with the respect due loaded gun he sure of your target before you pull the trigger always be sure that the barrel and action are clear of obstruction never point your gun at climb tree with loaded gun never shoot at hard flat surface or the surface of water Always be certain of your backdrop carry only em ty guns taken down with to action open into camp car or home store guns and ammunition separately and beyond the reach of children The 1977 waterfowl season officially opens Saturday half hour before sunrise wet August helped to top up the mar shes and assure sufficient brood water Last season ac cording to survey by the tanadian Wildlife Service threatened to trim the duck population But wet August helped to topup the marshes and assure sufficient brood water It looks good says Harold Van Wyck Conservation Officer Coordinator with the Ministry of Natural Resources Mid hurst as good or better than last year He was referring to the status of the duck population at the Tiny and Wye Marshes two favorite opening day haunts for Simcoe County waterfowlcrs visual survey this week of the two marshes as well as Mat chedash Bay revealed all three to be harboring abundant waterfowl with bluewing teal the most common flock sighted TINY MARSH Within half hours drive of Barrie is the Tin Marsh This 2800acre marsh as no restrict tions as to the number of hunters so opening day is usually hectic This spot deserves advance scouting with nearby farmland serving as dinner plate for hungry ducks boat is must and although there are number of established blinds most will be occupied early Satruday morn ing Quickest route to Tiny Marsh is Highway 27 through Elmvale to the first concession of Tiny Township The way is well marked WYE MARSH Access to the Wye Marsh is off Heritage Drive Highway 12 on the outskirts of Midland There is parking available with Annual harvest survey helps determine limits Each year the Canadian Wildlife Service CWSi Department of Fisheries and the Environment conducts migratory game birds harvest survey The purpose of this survey is to determine season dates bag and possession limits for the following season Hunters can help the CWS by keeping careful records on their daily bag on the car which is attached to migratory game bird hunting permit The data is needed to coni plete the harvest survey ques tionnaire which is mailed to movi some hunters picked at ran dom at the end of the season The 1976 harvest for exam ple revealed that 144000 licens ed ntario hunters retrieved over 934000 ducks and 45000 geese during the hunting season PERMIT REQUIRED Each hunter must have migratory game hunting per mit Only Indians and Inuit are exempt from this law The permit is sold for $350 at post offices across the pro viiice etrivia 1115 restriction placed on the number of hunters 50 boat is must but motors are banned The blinds which once stood have been reduced to nothing more than partially submerged platforms in most cases Geese are protected within the boundaries of the Wye Marsh MATCHEIASII BAY Sometimes referred to as the Goldwater Swamp Mactach edash Bay consistently yields high harvest on Opening day Unfortunatelv its been the traditional place to go opening day and on occasion it appears there are more hunters than ducks Shooting is most productive early in the morning and it doesnt take the birds long to wisen up and begin coasting to the clouds well out of shotgun range Matchedash Bay can be hunted on foot as portions are shallow enough to ac commodate chestwaders Most hunters however prefer to use aboat All three marshes are watch ed over by the Ministry of Natural Resources All three have no hunting areas which are clearly marked While opening day is marked by heavy turnout of hunters it is also the time of heaviest scrutinzation by conservation officers The penalties for over killare stiff Hunters using Matchedash Bay are advised to be aware of and pay heed to the signs warn ing hunters of its restricted area Sept 11 to Doc 15
