Barrie Ontario Tel 705 7263333 On rights to players WHA has agreed TORONTO TPi The World Hockey Association will be giving up hell of lot if it is accepted in the National Hockey League Gilles Leger general manager of the WHA Birmingham Bulls said Friday The WHA has agreed to NHL demands on rights to players in the latest move to bring about merger between the leagues lhese demands are key to the NHLs acceptance of at least six WHA franchises in an expansion vote and may strip the WHA of its better players whose rights are also held by NHL clubs The NHL is seeking compensation for those players We could lose key playing personnel and receive nothing in return Leger said Com pensation is important but what can you do The settlement Toronto Globe and Mail says involves three categories of players Negotiation nominees or WHA players who have never played in the NHL or were never drafted by NHL clubs WILL HAVE RIGHTS For example should forward Anders Hedbergs contract with the WHA Winnipeg Jets lapse Toronto Maple Leafs who own Hedbergs NHL rights will have prior negotiation ri ts Should the Leafs sign berg they would not have to compensate the Jets Unsigned draft choices who defected from the NHL and signed with the WHA This de mand is retroactive through the 1977 amateur draft and covers two areas first if the WHA signs player selected in the 1977 ama teur draft who was also picked in similar round of the NHL draft the WHA will com pensate the NHL with draft pick in 1978 Second player such Bir minghams Mark Napier who has played in the WHA and only to NHL demands became eligible for the NHL draft this year would be treated differently Montreal Canadiens drafted Napier in June and under the NHLs new player rights could sign with Montreal when his contract ex pires next season The Cana diens would not owe the Bulls any compensation However if the Bulls reno giate Napiers contract Mon treal will collect firstround draft choice as compensation SOME MAY RETURN Established defected play ers such as Bobby Hull of the Jets and Marc Tardif of Quebec Nordiques who jumped leagues could return to their original clubs at the expiry of their WHA contracts without compensation In addition the NHL imposed May 1977cutoff on the WHA regarding renewed contracts Any contract signed since then will not be honored by the NHL Even Superman will be impressed We cant guarantee Superman will be there but if he comes hell be impressed Celebrity Superstars 77 is the first annual competitions being held Monday August at pm at Centennial Park during Kem penfest
